In Malta very few know that in the past cars, vans, trucks etc; were refered to by their nicknames. Most Maltese were illiterate and could not pronounce the brand names which obviously were in a foreign language, so one had to create a way how to be understood.

Brand Names were twisted in a way that one had to learn the language but, better still most cars were given nicknames which in way was very practical. I shall give some examples and show some photos:

Vauxhall tac-Coff (Vauxhall with the bow tie) Vauxhall Wyvern had the grille which looked like a bow-tie.
Hillman tax-Xibka Tonda (Hillman with the round grille)
Anglia Television (Anglia 105E)
Anglia 105E had a squarish rear windscreen which resembled the front of a TV set.
Bedford Bulldog (Bedford Van) Bedford Van that had the front that looked like a bulldog face
