March Rendezvous

On Tuesday March 13th we met in Kernersville as we do on the second Tuesday of each month, rain or shine, holiday or workday. There were 4 Ferraris, 2 Alfa Romeos, 4 Porsches, 2 Austin Healeys, and 1 MGA, and a 3 liter Nissan in the car park.

Jon Saylor gave a short talk on the upcoming Rally March 31. John Hauser spoke on the upcoming Wine Tour hosted by our MAARC brethren in Northern Virginia. Blake Frazier and Jim Clarkson spoke about the last MAARC tech session at Peter Krause’s shop in North Raleigh. John Hauser spoke on the February Cento Quaranta Miglia which had a Saab 900, an Alfa Romeo Sprint Speciale and a Ferrari 328 start the 140 morning run that ended at Ollies French Bakery and Cafe in Salem.

Porsches were a big focus that evening. Ron Whedbee spoke about his team which is gearing up for the 24 hours at Daytona in 2002. They will be running a Porsche GT3 and it appears there will be alot of experienced persons on the team. Cliff Hudgins gave an update on Randall Yows Porsche swap meet and the Porsche club rally out of Asheville.

Jim Clarkson shared his personal black and white photographs he took of formula one races in 1961 with close ups of the cars and drivers and personalities such as Dan Gurney, Ritchie Ginther, Jo Bonier, Graham Hill, Bruce McLaren, Huschke von Hanstein and others. The close ups and the state of the paddock in 1961 is a real reminder of how distant the viewing is today.

In attendance were jack O’Brien in an MGA, Cliff Hudgins in a Porsche Boxster, Alexander Hauser in a Healey, Kevin Harper,Jim Clarkson in a Ferrari Testarossa, Bob King in a Porsche 911, Jon Saylor, Vic Beaver in a Porsche Boxster, Steven Jones in a Errari 328, Tom Jones in a Ferrari 308, Jerry and Carolyn Anderson in their Healey BN4, Blake Frazier in his Nissan track car, John Harrill in his Alfa Romeo 164, Ed Wentz in his Alfa Romeo Quadifoglio, Dan Emmi in Terri’s Ferrari 328 GTS, and Rod Whedbee in his Porsche 911 SC and Bill Diamond.

CorsaRossican Beth Snow cheers Ferrari to a 1-2 in malaysia

Corsa Rossa at the Malaysian Grand Prix

We received these pictures from Beth and Bob Snow. They combined an Asian vacation with a visit to the Malaysian GP. As you probably know by now, Ferrari scored a spectatcular 1-2 finish, after both cars spinning off on a rain-slick track, and running in 10th and 11th place for a while.

The beauties and the beast:
Bob "Lucky" Snow in good company in Malaysia.

We don't know if Bob and Beth had anything to do with Ferrari's fortunate choce of intermediate tires, that played such an important role in winning. We suspect that our friends may have had a finger in the pie: After all, recent North Carolina winters have taught them to be prepared for anything! Be that as it may, the tire choice was the right one, and Ferrari is off to a good season start 23 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes. But those BMW powered Willams cars look awfully strong, and Jordan is on the prowl...

The Vintage Virginia 2001 Wine Tour
"2001 - A Wine Odyssey"

Dave and Debbie Morris have been busy getting things in order for the annual Wine Tour. Skip Patnode has the hotel lined up. We need to get on the ball and make our reservations. Its almost time for the Hampton Roads Branch of the Mid Atlantic Alfa Romeo Clubs Signature event scheduled for Friday April 20-Sunday April 22.

In the past we have had a good attendance from the Winston Salem area. The first year we had 2 people in a Saab. The second year we had 4 people with an Alfa Romeo Veloce Spider and a Ferrari 365 GTC, the third year we had eight people in a Porsche 912, Alfa Romeo 164, MG Midget, and a Ferrari 348. This will be the fifth year of this wonderful event and I cannot imagine missing it.

On Friday night we will have Pizza and Birra and Vino at the English Inn. We will enjoy great comradry. Saturday Morning we will visit International Auto parts and do some shopping and enjoy their annual hospitality. Around 10 am we will take the twisting Backroads off highway 29 and visit two special Wineries. We will have a MAARC sponsored lunch. Please call Dave or Debbie so they can make arrangements. There will then be time to walk around the University of Virginia or Downtown Charlottesville or go to the Boars Head Resort for a coffee.

Saturday night we will eat at one of Charlottesvilles' nice Italian restaurants, then stumble to be so we can keep going on Sunday.

Sunday after breakfast at the English Inn wee will take back to the twisting winding hill country outside Charlottesville and visit two more wineries.

For Room reservations call English Inn in Charlottesville at 1- 900-786-5400. A double room is $70.80. I booked today March 17th and I had to be persistent since the already booked 25 rooms under the Mid Atlantic Alfa Romeo Clubs name. The folks are most helpful after you tell them you have stayed there before and how much you'd rather be there than the Days Inn or Comfort Inn next door! Be persistent. Although the cut off reservation date at the hotel is April 13th I had some difficulty getting my room. Call now!

That same weekend on the south course at VIR is the Ferrari Driving Weekend for Ferrari Club of America members and”their guests”.
