Corsa Rossa's Eurpean Car Show 2002

The Corsa Rossa European Festival on October 12th, 2002 was preceded by Monsoons on Thursday and Friday with clearing Friday evening. Saturday welcomed enthusiastic with cool crisp and partly cloudy weather. 141 cars registered including 32 Austin Healeys, the featured Marque, 20 Alfa Romeos, 10 Ferraris, 4 Maseratis, 2 Lamborghinis, 1 Fiat, 13 BMMs, 3 BMW Minis, 2 Austin Minis, 3 Mercedes, 3 Vokswagens, 19 Porshes, 3 Citroen, 1 Alpine, 6 Jaguars, 2 Jensen Healeys, 1 Landrover, 1 Lotus, 7 Triumphs, 3 Cobras, and a Saab Sonnet.

The music varied from Jazz to Celtic to Scottish Pipes. The Stratford Brass Quintet which played in Reynolda Village between the Lake and Dairy was sponsored by Foreign Cars Italia of Greensboro. The Celtic group Gaylewynd was sponsored by Von’s Restorations of Fort Mill South Carolina and played at Reynolda House on the lawn next to the Austin Healeys celebrating their 50th Anniversary. Franz Cone played the bag pipes and was sponsored by Healey enthusiasts.

The class awards and sponsors were awarded at 3:30 P.M. at the fountain in front of Reynolda House.

This years Featured Marque was Austin-Healey in honor of the 50th Anniversary of this venerable Marque. No fewer than 32 Healeys of all descriptions were in attendance, representing a complete expose' of the development of the marque and a treat for any British car enthusiast! After the awards the Festival continued to 5:00 P.M. at which time many participants were flagged off for a thirty minute Historic Tour through the Grayland Estate, the Buena Vista Neighborhood, Runneymeade, the West End, Grace Court, historic Fourth Street, Downtown past the “Model for the Empire State Building”, Brookstown Mill and Old Salem. After the tour the participants settled in to a party on the lawn in Old Salem hosted by Carol Wooley.

On Sunday the Corsa Rossa Mini Miglia, a one hundred-mile noncompetitive rally ran through historic Moravian Settlements and then north into the mountains and up to Fransico on the Virginia border and back. We settled into a great lunch at the Fourth Street Filing Station in the West End. Driving in the Mini Miglia were the Coughman’s in a 328 Ferrari; Vic, Amy, Rob and Heather in a BMW 330, Denise and Jennifer Burchette in a Fiat 124; the Flyus in a BMW 2002; Scott and Rod Sturdy in a BMW 2002; John and Kaye parker in an Alfa Romeo Veloce; Byron Dutcher and Victor in a Triumph TR6, Dana Loomis in an Alfa Romeo Ti; John and Karen Harrill in an Alfa Romeo 164; Jim Clarkson and Blake Frazier in a Ferrari Testarossa; Rodney Trask in a Mini Cooper; Greg and Adam Trask in a 360 Ferrari Spyder; Ian Klass, Rob Maybach, Alex Herman in a BMW M3; Jim and Lory Grasslight in a Citroen Traction Avant; Tom, Anne Marie and JR in an MG Magnet; Britt and Bill Belch in a Mercedes 230 SL; Skip and Phyllis Patnode in an Alfa Romeo Duetto; Bill and Jane Kissenger in an Alfa Romeo Veloce, Don King in a Corvette; Doug Higgins in a Triump TR4; John and Linda Grenier in a Healey 3000, the Farmers in a Healey; Bob King in a Porsche Cabriolet, Jack O’Brien and John Hauser in a MGA.
