Steve, When we unloaded the Steve Smith Autosports/Oregon Trail Racing Promotions Ford Taurus at MIS, we knew we did not have the speed of the top running cars but had a good 'long green' car.,
Qualified 5th and fell back a few spots as the race unfolded. This was expected. Made pitstops on the early cautions just for fresh skins and fuel in case, there were some long green runs.
Well, the yellow flew around lap 31 (third caution) and as luck would have it, along with the expert driving skills of the Nwst drivers, that turned out to be the last one.
I knew the setup would go the distance remaining, the only question was who else could and what their speed would be at the end of the run if it went green.
About lap 35 a situation occurred on the front straight when EMon lost a piston (warp) and Szim swung out low to avoid him. I was in the process of passing low when this transpired and luckily was able to take it to the apron and hold it there while Szim expertly avoided a collision. Salute Steve, my hat's off to ya!!
As the racers' right fronts wore and their speeds dropped I was able to steadily climb through the field when with about two to go I was able to pass JohnRacer in turn 4 and then the leader Pauly on the backstraight approaching turn 3. Pauly scrapped the wall coming off turn 2 which certainly helped me in passing him.
Congrats to Pauly on one heck of a strong run (he led 62 of the 80 laps) and to JohnRacer and the Zimmerlys. Of course, congrats to the rest of the Nwst drivers for another fine event.
Never really thought I'd be here in the Winner's Circle at the start of the race, just felt if I could run clean a top 5 was possible. The long green and watching the tire squeel to keep the tire temps down is what won the race for me.
Of course, shock settings, camber and tire pressure play a big part in the setup and tire wear. The shop's been working on a long green setup for a few seasons now and using it today sure paid off. If there had been a late yellow, then there's no way I would be here in the Winners Circle right now.
That's 2 wins in three weeks. I'm walking on air right now in that my last Nwst/Nros win was in season 1 at Charlotte and that took JohnRacer getting into the wall for me to win it. I had no wins last season. After winning the Brickyard two weeks ago, I figured I finally won a race and that was satisfaction enough for this season. This is great!! Look out Dano...here I come!! ;-)
Thanks to Johnny Peede for running the Nwst/Nros. Without his unselfish efforts, I would not be standing here in the Winners Circle right now.
Thanks Steve.
