1978 Mustang II Ghia Rebuild Project - by Norm Jones

In June 1995, I bought my first car, a 1978 Mustang II Ghia.

The first modification that I made was to change the cap and rotor and spark plugs and wires.  I went to Accel for the plug wires and cap and rotor.  I started out with Bosch Platinum plugs ($50).  Shortly after that I hooked up an Accel SuperCoil ($80).

The next summer, 1997, I started the larger tasks.  The body had taken on some pretty bad rust from my second winter in it.  At that point i decided no more winters.  I had the body sandblasted and retinned and painted and the vinyl roof coated ($1350).  Towards the end of the summer, the y pipe of the exhaust went.  I decided I didn't want single exhaust and instead bought headers and had a system custom made with two Cherry Bombs out the back ($1,200).  Right after that, I decided to have the rear leaf springs replaced.  Of course, those also had to be custom built, since it is a Ghia they are six inches longer than other MII's ($650).

In August 1997 the carburetor went on my Mustang. I was told $600 to replace it. At that time I realized that I might as well put that money towards making it the car I wanted, not necessarily the car Ford built.
