An Interview with Melanie C

You started out as a graceful ballet dancer and ended up Sporty Spice. What gives?
I wanted to be a dancer, but I've also always been into football (you Yanks call is soccer) because of where I'm from -- Liverpool loves football. And ballet and football aren't all that different. There's a lot of skill involved in both.
Got any lame-date stories for us?
This boy thought it would be really nice to take me out shopping for girlie clothes, which was a big mistake. I'd much rather have gone to a football match.
So how do you work up a sweat?
I love exercise, and I go to the gym about five times a week. I run five miles or so and do weights and lots of abdominal work. But I still find that one of the best ways to exercise is to put on my favorite tunes and jump around like a nutter.
Do you have a favorite body part?
My right arm -- it's got my tattoos on it. One say "Girl Power" -- Well actually, "Women Strength" -- in Japanese characters.
Why body part do you like least?
My legs are like blokes' legs.
What would you say to a girl who's always the last one picked for any team?
Think "Sod it! It's their loss." If you're no good at sports, it's probably because you're much better than anyone else at something different.
Don't you just love the way you look?
I hated it for a long time. The turning point came when I thought, "Hang on a minute -- this is just the way I am. I may as well learn to appreciate the good bits."
Any advice for would-be Spice Girls?
Where I am now is absolute proof that if you really want something bad enough, you can get it.
What would you say to someone who thinks that Spice Girls are pointless and talentless?
Nothing. Some people love us, and some people loathe us. You can't dwell on it, can you? They're entitled to their own opinion. I think Madonna is so talented and so intelligent, but some people just think she's a talentless slag.
Have you yet been in the position where you're with someone and you wonder if they're thinking, "Wow! I'm having sex with a Spice Girl!"?
I should be so lucky as to be in that position. I do feel like I can't meet anybody at the moment - or maybe, ever again - that's not going to think, "It's a Spice Girl." It's a horrible feeling. It's just human nature - when people see me, they don't see me, they see a Spice Girl. I haven't had sex since we've been successful. It's over a year. It doesn't bother me, though. I'm not really interested in sex and stuff. Not at the moment, anyway. I went through a phase where I had boyfriends, so I've kind of been-there-done-that kind of thing. Men bore me. I'm not saying women excite me, but men bore me.
What's the most offensive thing that's been said about you?
I think I've got off quite lightly. Sometimes, for a second, something makes you go, "Oh." Ages ago, one of the first things in the paper about us, I was described as the plain one. I thought, "That's not very nice." Then I thought, "Fuck it."
