Rose & Basketweave Mini Wedding Cake

This is the smallest wedding cake I've done to date, and the only one that has been a complete surprise to the recipients.

My SCA friend Daria got married in Iowa, and I wasn't able to make it to the wedding. She had mentioned previously that it was too bad that she couldn't have a 'Magdacake' for her wedding. She ended up doing cakes from Costco (which I hear were quite tasty).

As it happened, a couple of friends and I were planning to go to a medieval/renaissance dance event in Madison, Wisconsin a week after the wedding, and Daria and her new husband were also planning to attend. So I thought it would be cool to make a mini wedding cake and bring it along as a surprise for them.

The cake is made with 4 single layer tiers, the largest being 8 inches in diameter, and the smallest only 2" wide (smaller than a cupcake). I was originally going to ice them smooth and pipe on a scroll design, but I quickly discovered that icing a tiny cake smooth is VERY hard. They don't weigh enough to sit still when you press against the sides to smooth the icing, and even after I'd put a stake down through the stacked cakes the top one wanted to spin. I decided to go with the other design I'd considered, basketweave. More time consuming, but much easier to do without the cakes moving. A few royal icing roses, and it was done.

The cake survived the trip in perfect condition, and Daria's reaction when she saw it was all that I could have possibly wished for and more. She literally squealed, and alternated between jumping up and down and hugging me. Adam also seemed pleased (in a more quiet fashion), and they decided to freeze the top two tiers to save for their anniversary next year, as they hadn't saved any cake from their actual wedding.
