Unicorn Tapestry Cake

April, 2005

This cake was constructed for the dessert revel at the SCA event "Terpsichore at the Tower XI". It was inspired by the Unicorn in Captivity tapestry at the Cloisters in NYC.

The cake was carved from stacked 12, 10 and 8 inch layers and iced in buttercream. The flowers were royal icing and the Unicorn, fence, and leaves and fruits of the tree were made of gumpaste, with the mane, end of tail and beard out of royal.

Note that the unicorn's collar is also made of gumpaste, decorated with gold luster dust painted on with vanilla extract, and a goldtone bracelet is attached (with royal) to chain the unicorn to the tree. The horn was made by twisting two gumpaste strings together and rolling smooth, and the tail was made around a piece of florist wire for strength.

The cake itself was in the Barony's heraldic colors of red, white and black, with the bottom layer being chocolate, the middle red velvet, and the uppermost vanilla cake.

Overall, I was extremely pleased with this cake (having had limited faith in my own untested modeling skills).
