Golden Syrup Dumplings

6 oz self-raising flour
1/2 tsp baking powder
1 oz butter
1 egg, lightly beaten
2 fl oz milk
Syrup
1 1/2 oz butter
4 tbsps golden syrup
12 fl oz boiling water

Sift flour and baking powder into a medium-sized bowl. Cut in the butter. Rub butter into the flour until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add combined egg and milk, and mix to a soft dough using a knife. Press mixture lightly into a ball. Divide into 12 equal portions and form into balls.
Melt butter in a large pan and add the golden syrup. Stir over medium heat until butter melts and the ingredients are combined. Add the water and stir to combine.
Gently put the dumplings into the boiliing syrup, cover and reduce heat to a simmer. Cook for 10 minutes, until a knife inserted in the centre of a dumpling comes out clean. Serve with cream or ice cream. Serves 4-6.
