Zamboanga can be found on the southernmost point of the
Zamboanga Peninsula on Mindanao, the second-largest island
of the Philippines. It is bound to the west by the Sulu Sea,
to the east by Moro Gulf, and to the south by the
Basilan Strait and Celebes Sea.
The name "Zamboanga" comes from the
Malay word, "Jambangan," meaning "Land of Flowers,"
from which its popular name "City of Flowers" originated.
"Jambangan" may have been used by the Malays
when they settled here.
Some believe that the name comes from "Samboangan,"
a word that means "boat place," which may very well explain
the history of the unique and colorful sails of the Vintas
from this region.
Spanish and Malay influence is seen in the local Chavacano
dialect, which consists of 70% Spanish and 30% Malay, Bisaya,
and other dialects from neighboring regions.
The people of Zamboanga comprise of about 70% Christians and
25% Muslims (Tausugs, Yakans, Badjaos, Samals, and Subanons).
