FIRST CHURCH IN ROCHESTER
In April of 1730 the townspeople of Rochester voted to erect a meeting house. It was decided that the meeting house would be 40 feet long, 35 feet wide. In 1731 the meeting house was finished and it was located on Rochester Hill. Over the next several years several different ministers preached in the meeting house. In 1737 Parson Main was asked to be the permanent minister (and he accepted) and the meeting house became the Congregational Church. After a few years the church was dismantled and moved to the Rochester Commons and the building was greatly enlarged from the original specifications. Later still the church was moved to it's present location of South Main Street and Liberty Street.
