Memorable Beers

Yards Brewing Company - Saison Belgian Style Ale

Brewed by Yards Brewing Company, Philadelphia, PA, it is a very authentic Belgian style brew. To appreciate its cloudy appearance, pour it into a glass and hold it up to the sunlight. There are a lot of great American microbrews available, but this is a standout.

Ayinger Jahrhundert

This is my favourite beer from the Brauerei Aying. Most of my favourite beers are dark, but this one is not. I rather this more than Ayinger Celebrator Doppelbock (which is also excellent). I noticed a similar flavour when I had Boulder Beer Pale Ale (Rockies Brewing Company).

District Chophouse & Brewery - Bourbon Stout cask

Bourbon Stout draught is brewed and served at District Chophouse & Brewery in Washington, DC. This unique brew is oatmeal stout conditioned in Old Grand-Dad barrels and is served at room temperature. Because of its conditioning, it does have a bourbon flavour. It was worth the Metro ride to Gallery Place-Chinatown, near the MCI Center.

Boscos - Isle O' Skye Scottish Ale draught

All beers brewed and served at Boscos, Germantown, TN are great. Isle O' Skye Scottish Ale draught is the standout.

Dragon Stout

This is the beer that got me interested in beer tasting. My friend Chuck bought me a Dragon Stout at Stan's Blue Note in Dallas, TX, in 1987. At the first sip it tasted like a cross between beer and paint! When I was half way through the bottle, the taste grew on me. After I finished the bottle, I ordered a second bottle. The bartender got on his microphone, pointed at me and said, "This is a very sick man!"

Stegmaier 1857

This is not your grandfather's Steg. At the beginning of the microbrewing revolution the Lion Brewery in Wilkes-Barre, PA stepped upto the plate with this brew. It is one of the lower costing microbrews, but it can go toe-to-toe against Becks.

Kellys Brewery Restaurant and Pub - Dark Mild draught

This low alcohol (3.5% alcohol by volume) dark beer is brewed and served at Kellys Brewery Restaurant and Pub, Albuquerque, NM. While it is not as rich and full bodied as other good dark beers, it is good for a low alcohol brew.

Capitol City Brewing Company - Inaugural Ale draught

I had this “once in a lifetime” beer in Washington, DC, on January 17, 2001, just three days before the inauguration of the 43rd President of the United States of America, George W. Bush. This beer was brewed and served in the Capital Hill location of the Capitol City Brewing Company, near the US Capitol Building.

Samuel Smith Celebrated Oatmeal Stout

When I first saw the unopened bottle, I thought it was a dark beer bottle. When it was poured, I saw that the bottle is clear. I have tasted over 1000 different beers, but this is the beer that I drink if it's available, and there is nothing else new to try.

Beers Best Forgotten

Cool Colt 45

This was available in the late 1980's. Menthol flavoured malt liquor, no need to say more.

Billary

Bill and Hillary Clinton - Billary, get it? This novelty beer was contract brewed for Presidential Bottlers, Inc., Cleveland, OH in or about 1994. Cheap beer in a novelty can, but that's exactly what I expected.

Crazy Ed's Cave Creek Chili Beer

Beer flavoured with chili peppers. I've heard that it goes good with a bowl of chili. On its own, it's so bad it's terrible.

Jever

Touted as a fine German beer. The store display offered a free .3 liter glass with the purchase of a 6-pack. The glass is nice, but the beer is awful. It has a metalic taste. It is very seldom whan I say a beer is awful, but Jever is one of those cases. August 2001
