War for What?

Some called it war between the states,

for independence, or a big mistake.

Some men fought to free the slaves;

some to prolong the good old days.

No matter why they came to fight,

be it for freedom or their state's rights,

they drew their swords, they fired their guns,

and shed the blood of mother's sons.

On paper, they set free the slaves,

then shackled the South in many ways

the same as those they fought to change.
