TOM MAHIEU

    THE WRITER

Tom started out in life strictly a singer and performer. It wasn't until he moved to Dallas, Texas that he even considered songwriting. "It was strange to me that I hadn't already started writing years ago. It was a pretty natural process for me. Once I started writing all the words and music just seem to flow right out of me. So much that I couldn't even turn it off! My brother Danny had already been writing for a while. I guess it's just in my genes." The vehicle that faced him down the road of writing was a band he joined called Triangle. It was composed of three performers one of which pushed the band into writing original material. Even though the band broke up after a few years Tom still worked on his craft and has found a true extention of his creative expression. "I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't write anymore. It's really become a part of my everyday life. No matter what I'm doing I always keep my ears and my eyes open for any good song ideas that might come my way."

"People ask me all the time what instrument I use to write with. I't's hard to believe but I don't actually play an instrument! Everything that comes to me is right in my head. I always sing what I'm hearing over and over again so I won't forget it. Then when I get home I'll put it on tape. I've gotten into the habit of always having a pen and paper around just in case I get an idea. For a while, I would carry a micro recorder with me. That is until it broke. Now I'm looking at getting a small digital recorder to take with me. Love that technology!"

Through the years Tom has developed a deep respect for songwriting and tries to honor that respect by making each and every song the best that it can possibly be. "I really believe that a truely great song touches people in profound ways and then again maybe that profoundness can be simply getting someone to get up and dance like crazy. I don't believe in writing just sad songs or dance songs. I believe in writing the full spectrum of our emotions. After all, we all have good times and we all have bad times!" Originally, Tom started out writing pop and r&b songs, which is what he primarily performed until he took a writing class in Los Angeles. Then his whole world would turn upside down. "In my writing class we were studying all types of music. I guess what attracted me most to country was the honesty of the lyrics. I could really relate to the songs and the down-to-earthness of it all. I think I was getting tierd of pop lyrics too. They just didn't sing to me anymore!
