Growth of Khadi and Village
Industries

In 1955-56, there were only 2 State KVI Boards, 242 registered institutions and 60 cooperatives under the purview of KVIC. The number has now increased to 30 State KVI Boards, 4869 registered institutions and 30112 cooperatives, over 7.8 lakh individuals, 188 departmental units and 15,441 sale outlets operating in 2.48 lakh villages in the country. Production which was at the level of Rs.16.47 crores (Khadi Rs.5.54 crores and Village Industries Rs.10.93 crores) in 1955-56 increased to Rs.5043.85 crores (Khadi Rs.624.10 crores and Village Industries Rs.3895.91 crores) in 1997-98. Similarly, the employment level increased from 9.64 lakh persons (Khadi 6.57 lakhs) (V.I. 3.07 lakhs) to 60.15 lakhs (Khadi 14.01 lakhs; V.I. 42.49 lakhs) during the same period.
