The significant characteristics of Khadi and Village Industries under the purview of KVIC are:-

  1. Capacity to utilise locally available raw materials and skills;

  2. Ready local markets for the goods produced;

  3. Low per capita investment;

  4. Simple techniques of production which can be easily acquired and adopted by rural people;

  5. Short gestation period;

  6. Environment friendly and non-polluting activities of production;

  7. Production of consumer goods.


The thrust as well as distinguishing feature of KVI activities is that the sector provides larger share of employment to SC/STs which comprise nearly 32% of the work force and women nearly 46%.
