Thinking about taking a foreign language? Did you take Spanish in High School and wonder how much you remember? There are many resources on the web that can help you learn more or test your abilities.

First of all, there are dictionaries on the web that are free. Most are limited in the number and complexity of words, but if you don't have a real dictionary handy, the web dictionaries will most likely serve your purpose. Usually, looking up a word produces an almost instantaneous response, and using a web dictionary is less time-consuming than the traditional dictionary.

 For example, when I typed the French verb "renvoyer" in the University of Chicago French-English, English-French Dictionary, it only took 3 seconds for the English meaning "to return" to appear. If you're looking to improve your language skills or recapture your High School French days, The Virtual French Lesson might be for you. There are various links to language-learning sites, organized by level. If you're looking to test your knowledge of Italian or are interested in learning a little of the language, I recommend The Travlang Italian Site. This site allows the beginner to learn basic Italian words and phrases and take a test on the material.

 Next, there are virtually limitless sites that cover topics of culture, geography, literature and travel that you can find by searching for a topic using a search engine such as Altavista, Yahoo , or HotBot. You can find anything from The Simpsons' Site in Spanish to The Latin American Countries Page. If you're searching in French, there's a search engine called Lokace that accepts French key words for a search - all the matching sites will be in French.
