Mr. Job, Director of Upward Bound
CUNY-City College of New York
Convent Ave at 138th Street
New York, NY 10031
Dear Sir:
I’m currently a sophomore at the University of San Francisco in San Francisco, Ca, and have good academic standing. I’m majoring in Biology with Molecular Biology emphasis and pre-medical preparation. I attend college in California, but I reside in New York City. This letter is in regards to possible openings for a tutor/counselor position at CUNY-City College of New York.
I’m interested in tutoring/teaching and counseling minority disadvantaged high school students. As a Latina growing up in New York City with limited resources, I understand the difficulties that minority high school students can encounter on their road to obtaining a college education. I deeply believe that programs such as Upward Bound are an exceptional resource for high school students. In the past two years I have tutored and mentored at Upward Bound at the University of San Francisco. I share the vision of the Upward Bound program and I aspire to continue contributing to its mission.
My previous educational courses have enabled me to tutor in the following math (algebra and geometry), sciences (biology, chemistry, physics and earth science), social sciences (global studies, US government and US history), and romance languages (Spanish and Italian). Multicultural courses at the University of San Francisco and previous multicultural training has prepared me to interact with students from diverse backgrounds. In addition, being trilingual in English, Spanish and Italian has allowed me to interact with ESL students. My participation as a mentee and then as a mentor in a college-mentoring program for multicultural students has enriched my skills to advice and counsel high school students.
Thank you for your time and consideration. If you have any questions, comments, or would like to make a follow-up appointment, don’t hestitate to contact me at (415) 422-8252. I will return to New York City on June 3rd, please call (212) 222-1410. You may also email me at all times, at lady_merrique@yahoo.com
Sincerely,
Violeta Pantaleón
