Since 1979, Bauhaus have been the purveyors of the "goth" scene. Many consider them the "Godfathers of Goth," although the band members themselves would beg to differ. Since the band's demise in 1983, their legend has continued to go. The members of Bauhaus were consistent; but after the break-up, there were always line-up changes, creative discontent and incestuous relationships between Bauhaus, Tones On Tail and Love & Rockets. Below is a brief outline - see for yourself.

After the band split up in 1983, Peter Murphy started a collaboration with the bassist for the band Japan, Mick Karn. In 1984, they created the one off album entitled "The Waking Hour". Adopting the moniker Dali's Car, the record was released to little fanfare. Discontent with their working relationshio, Peter and Mick went their separate ways shortly after the release of The Waking Hour. In 1985, Peter decided to start work on "The Light Pours Out Of Me," this album would become the start of a very productive solo career for Peter.

In 1981, while Bauhaus was still together, Daniel Ash formed Tones on Tail with Glenn Campling. Glenn had been a roadie for Bauhaus during their various gigs and tours. Tones on Tail started as a side project/music outlet for Daniel who was feeling stifled by the entity that was Bauhaus. After Bauhaus' break-up, Kevin Haskins joined Daniel and Glenn. A short time later, Daniel felt the vibe wasn't working with Glenn and he approached Peter about a Bauhaus reunion. Peter was in the midst of his solo career and unfortunately backed out of the plan. Daniel continued working with Kevin and Glenn; but David J. soon joined the band and promptly took over bass duties for Glenn. Love & Rockets was born.

In 1983, David J. started pursuing his own solo career. Much like Dali's car, David J.'s album "Ettiquite of Violence" was released with little fanfare. David then began working with The Jazz Butcher (a musical vehicle for Pat Fish). After releasing two albums with the Jazz Butcher "The Jazz Butcher Conspiracy" and "The Jazz Butcher & His Sikkorskis From Hell," David J. started the Sinister Ducks with members of The Jazz Butcher and comic-book writer Alan Moore. Obviously, David's creative juices were flowing and he decided to continue working on his solo career. In 1985, David J. released his second album entitled "Crocodile Tears and Velvet Cosh." It is after this pivotal release that David J. joined Love & Rockets.

As if all this incest wasn't enough, there's also those damn Bubblemen. Credited as "Friends of Love & Rockets", Daniel, Kevin and David couldn't fool us. The Bubblemen are said to be the alter ego of Love & Rockets. They made guest appearances at various Love & Rockets concerts "singing" their signature song "The Bubblemen are Coming." They were so popular, in fact, that they were prominently featured between tracks on the Love and Rockets video collection entitled "The Haunted Fishtank" and also made an appearance in the video for "Ying and Yang the Flowerpot Man."

Since 1998, both Peter Murphy and Love & Rockets have enjoyed successful careers and the cult followings they have acquired are legendary. It goes without saying that both Peter and Love & Rockets have had wonderful careers. Although they've never really gained mass popularity, both have enjoyed a great level of success. Love & Rocket's biggest smash was "So Alive."

Much to the surprise of fans everywhere, Bauhaus reunited in 1998. The summer of 1998 was a buzz with talk of this impending tour. Of course, being the witty lads they are, they named it "The Resurrection Tour." The tour itself was a smashing success. Every interviewer asked the members the burning question..."Would Bauhaus make new music again?" Although they were getting on wonderfully and although their popularity had surged since 1983, all the members remained non-committal on this subject.

In February of 1999, Love & Rockets mounted a tour to promote their new album entitled "Lift". Again, Daniel, Kevin and David J. were greeted by their fans who still had visions of the Bauhaus reunions tour dancing in their heads. In April, 1999,as the tour was wrapping up, Love & Rockets shocked everyone by announcing they were breaking up. The last 2 dates of the tour, which ended in Los Angeles, California, would be their farewell shows.

Since that time, all the former members of Bahaus have remained busy. David J. recently held an online auction at eBay selling various bits of memorabilia to finance his new project. Some of the items up for auction were his coffin bass, notebooks containing lyrics to some of Bauhaus' most prolific songs and personal momentos.

Kevin has been sporting around with the co-producer and programmer for "Lift" Doug Deangelis forming an electronic project Kevin says is aptly named "MESSY." And both Kevin and David J. were playing with The Jazz Butcher during the summer of 1999.

Daniel has been working with a new band named Botanica fronted by Paul Wallfisch who had produced and engineered some tracks for Love & Rockets. Daniel can be heard on Botanica's release entitled "Malediction." This work is in addition to various scores Daniel has been rumored to be working on for various movie projects.

Peter, of course, is living in Turkey with his wife, Beyhan and their two children. Peter released an EP during the Bauhaus Resurrection tour entitled "Rollcall." In September, 1999 he was released from his recording contract with Red Ant Records. He recently finished a "greatest hits" album which is to be released on Beggars Banquet entitled "Wild Birds," and is kicking off a North American tour at the end of February, 2000 to support this release.

In November, 1999 Gotham was released to eager fans who wanted to re-live the reformation of Bauhaus in 1998. Visit their official site (link on links page) to order the CD or video of this historic concert. Bauhausmusik also has other merchandise on sale from the Resurrection tour. Go check it out.

Another bit of news is that the band has created a new song which will be included on the soundtrack for Heavy Metal: 2000. Who knows exactly what the future holds for this active and irreverent band. Whatever it is, I know I'll be eagerly waiting for it!
