THE DASH I read of a minister who stood to speak at the funeral of his friend.
He referred to the dates on her tombstone from the beginning… to the end.
He noted that first came the date of her birth and spoke of the following date of death with tears,
For that dash represents all the time that she spent alive on earth,
and now only those who loved her know what that little line is worth.
For it matters not, how much we wn; the cars, the house, and the cash.
What matters is how we live and love and how we spend our dash.
So think about this long and hard, are there things you’d like to change?
For you never know how much time is left. (You may be at “dash mid range.”)
If we could just slow down enough to consider what’s true and real,
and always try to understand the way other people feel.
And be less quick to anger. And show appreciation more
and love the people in our lives like we‘ve never l ved before.
If we treat each other with respect and more often wear a smile,
remembering that this special dash might only last a little while.
So, when your eulogy is being read with your life’s actions to rehash…
would you be pleased with the things they say about how you spent your dash?

I love you Angela.

What I will emember most about Angela, though, is her energy and sincerity. She always seemed to take on an impossible number of responsibilities, and yet she always did them with excellence. She had an unquenchable desire to learn; she progressed as a debater in years from scratch to better than most of us will ever be. And she took the things she learned seriously; while others would be looking for the next party, she'd be discussing the finer points of feminist thought over a cup of coffee. And it didn't sto with college; she had asked so many questions and read so many of Chris and I's law school materials that she understood far more than the average first-year law student already.

That desire to learn didn't stop with school, either. Angela was ded cated to improving herself as a person and accomplishing something with her life. She certainly accomplished more than anyone would've thought, but she never took herself too seriously. On the last, and best, day I spent with Ang this summer, she came o er to copy all my law school outlines, and then we went out to Chili's. We spent over 3 hours there, puzzling over our relationships with others, the nature of God and the universe, and her own religious convictions. She was truly a seeker of knowledge nd truth.

I'm also reminded of one morning when we had breakfast together at every Wayne debater's favorite restaraunt, the Coney King. How we got on the subject, I'm not sure, but she asked me what I wanted to to with my life, and what really motiva ed me. I came up with a few answers, but none of them really answered her question. She, on the other hand, had a number of well-thought-out goals. Everything that's happeend this summer has reinforced to me that the only legacy we can leave, and the o ly thing we do that truly matters, is how we affect the lives of others. Angela knew that, and the vast array of friends she leaves behind is a testament to how well she lived that truth. I only hope that her memory inspires me and others to be a bette friend, and to stay focused on the things that are truly important.
