Tripoli, Trablous Al Shark, is situated in Northern Lebanon. Tripolis of the Ancient, the city was a federation of three Phoenician cities (Tyre, Byblos and Arwad). No doubt that the intensity of its maritime traffic lasted for centuries. Around 40 pieces of potterie, from which only three where fragments, where found on the site, situated outside the actual jetty. The selection shown on the picture covers two millennium, from before the 13th century BC (T1) to the 3rd century of our era (T28). Here, I shall try to describe the few amphorae I had in my possession. In a near future, I shall continue with other amphorae, found on the same site. Most of those amphorae were unfortunately destroyed during the sad events which occurred in the Lebanon between 1975 and 1991. These artifacts were not collected from a homogeneous wreck. They were probably jettisoned from ships, after a difficult passage, before entering harbor. Note the presence, just to the east of the site, of two submerged rocks. This is what incited us to prospect the area. The findings have been tagged "T", for Tripoli. If you want to know more about the different findings you can click the map links .   Home
