Reading

For as long as i can remember, i have enjoyed reading and have been fascinated by the inimitable styles in which my favourite authors have so effortlessly conveyed their ideas. Whether through profound prose or pithy verbiage, i grew up captivated by the works of Asimov, Barker and Robbins. Below are some of the books i have enjoyed tremendously from different genres. You might want to try these and recommend me some of your own favourites.

Bicentennial Man - by Isaac Asimov (sci-fi)
Great and Secret Show - by Clive Barker (horror)
Sphere - by Michael Crichton (sci-fi thriller)
Happiness Purpose - by Edward De Bono (introspection)
Pulling Your Own Strings - by Dr Wayne Dyer (self-help)

My favourite reading spot is the loo (also known as my throne-room) . Ahh…i love the peaceful serenity, the enchanting sound of gushing water and the lingering aroma confined within the cold walls of the cubicle which proclaims me King of all that i survey. This sanctuary of sorts precludes me (albeit mometarily) from the daily struggles of the down-trodden, and allows me to champion my personal dramatic struggle against my impudent Bowels. It usually ends in great all-round relief and abrupt gratification, as the turn of the final page also signifies victory against the tyranny of constipate.

Writing

The love for reading soon compelled me to write something of my own. While, far from being an accomplished writer, i hope to write a book someday.

I'm also thinking of setting up an amateur Writer's Guild. I'd be delighted if you can contribute any original works (can be in any form; poetry, prose, essays, even one-liners) you have written to me. Whether it happens would depend on the contributions that i receive.

Travelling

While i would love to travel across the globe with just a back-pack and an open-mind, limited funds does not permit me. If like me, you love to travel and explore the infinite boundaries beyond our shores but lacks a travelling companion, do drop me a line. Perhaps we can venture to exotic Turkey or climb the mounts of Nepal together. Below are some pictures of my overseas forays.

Philosophy / Zen / Meditation

Actually i'm un-schooled in this field. But i have read a few extracts of works by Socrates, Voltaire and Lao Tze and am greatly intrigued by them. If you're into this kinda stuff, i invite you to share your thoughts and experiences. Some of my favourite zen ko'ans:

  • Don't giggle if someone farts in the lift, you might breathe in bad air.
  • If you can't learn to laugh at yourself, make fun of others.
  • The quick brown dog jumps over Samantha Fox. (i don't get it either?!!)

Investment / Money

I may have great thirst for philosophy and finding inner-peace but i also revere pragmatism. As soon i turned 21, i opened my CDP account and started 'playing' shares and to my great surprise actually made some money. But the market isn't always kind to greenhorn investors like me and i got burnt pretty badly a couple of times which had more than wiped out any profits i had accumulated previously. Still i have not lost the fire for investment. If you have any tips or advice on mutual funds, bonds, real-estate or other money-making ventures, please drop me a line and we'll discover the world of investment together.

Toastmasters

Presently, i'm the vp of Queenstown Toastmasters Club. To the uninitiated, this club trains its members to be more proficient in public speaking and presentation. The benefits are limitless, so long as you're willing to take up the challenge and give it a go. If you'd like to join or know more about this, i'd be more than glad to help you.

Music & Noise

If music be the mustard of love, spray on! Unlike the more trendy youths of today, I prefer contemporary soothing music. Among my favourite artiste are Jewel (wat a gem!), Boyzone and Mariah Carey (jim's sister).

Games / Recreation

I wouldn't get through a whole week without some form of recreation. Working out in the gym is great stress-reliever for me. I enjoy playing pool, cards (chao dai di), watching movies and plays. Most times i'm game to try something new. If you have a strange hobby and need to share it with someone, let me know. Either i'll join you or introduce you to a shrink.

Glory Man United

Before an old injury dashed my hopes, (i stubbed my toenail against the cat when i was 5) i dreamt of reaching the pinnacle of soccer glory with the ultimate soccer team, the Red Devils! Sighs of disappointment from me but double sighs of relief from Man U's rivals. Can you imagine the dream strike partnership of Eric and Me. That would have blown opponents into oblivion. But i have now accepted the fact that life has to go on a more mundane setting for me. Last week i finally forgave my cat for causing me that injury and i allowed my mom to throw away my baby boots.

Would anyone care to put a small wager (say, coffee) for the winner of this year's Premiership League title? Smart money's on Fergie's Fledgelings.

[if i sound obnoxious in the para above, no offense. I'm a bonafide Man U fan, i had to play the part!]
