Michel Nicol,
clay potter
Chambly, Québec

Welcome to the Nouvelle-France Collection, An invitation to touch history. In the era of New France, until the British conquest in 1759, most of the dish ware used by the inhabitants of Quebec was European, mainly from France. Dominant was the green pottery of Saintonge, brown earthenware, white earthenware from Rouen, Nevers, Angoulême, and Bérain designs from Moustiers. Pitchers, goblets, bowls; and tureens; clay cookware with evocative names like terrines, marmites, huguenotes, soupières, and chocolatières. All these objects are brought back to life thanks to the passion of a potter who has spent the last ten years studying the popular dish ware of the French regime in Canada. Michel Nicol has experimented extensively with clays and glazes to reproduce a number of these historical pieces as precisely as possible. All his works are artistically crafted in the spirit of the 18th century. He is the only potter in Quebec to focus all his efforts on the reproduction of artifacts. Inspired by the past, his faithful replicas revive these beautiful reminders of the Quebecois and French heritage. With their simple, elegant forms and rich colors, they are nothing less than an invitation to touch... history. The work of Michel Nicol demonstrates the creativity of an artist filled with passion for the history of his country and for his craft. The result is an important collection that opens a page on the daily history of our ancestors in New France.
