Artist's Statement by Keith Fox for his Solo Show titled
Abstractions and Semiastractions

This solo show consists of seventeen miniature acrylic works on canvas panels, of which ten employ an abstract method and seven employ a semiabstract method. Even though the ten abstract works differ stylistically from the seven semiabstract works, all seventeen works share a love of color and brush strokes.

To begin with, each of the ten abstract paintings is a canvas panel covered with vivid colors put together in loosely organized designs. Additionally, each arrangement is constructed from regularly repeated rectangles, and includes the words "freedom of speech" spelled out in a fanciful balloon. Similarly, an array of musical notes—all of which themselves are contained in fanciful balloons—completes each design.

Next, each of the seven semiabstract still lifes represents an interpretation of a teapot and tablecloth. In these interpretations, the teapot has been placed where earth meets sky, whereas the loosely arranged tablecloth was placed within reach for our comprehensive view. In this way, the teapot is not the only motif in these interpretations, but also the tablecloth becomes an object of study. Therefore, notice that the canvas panels are in fact full of undulant movements created by the very tablecloth.

Finally, the ten abstractions that have been selected for this solo show are derived from a 1994 series titled, "A Free-Speech Motif," and are numbered 4, 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, and 19 in this succession, while the seven semiabstractions that have been selected for this solo exhibition are derived from a 1996 series titled, "Teapot Compositions," and are numbered 2, 3, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 14 in that succession.
