ARTIST'S STATEMENT BY KEITH FOX FOR THE SERIES:

"A FREE-SPEECH MOTIF-PAINTINGS."

My name is Keith Fox and I am an assemblagist who arranges unrelated elements, such as, brush strokes, calligraphic handwriting, color, texture, line, text, patchwork quilting, images, shapes, and musical notes onto surfaces with paint for artistic effect. In other words, although I am an assemblagist, I am indeed a painter because I am one who paints as an artist rather than one who creates sculptural compositions from unrelated objects.

In this particular series of paintings, I have divided the word "freedom" into the two syllables, "free" and "dom," and then assembled these two syllables together by using a hyphen, which is a punctuation mark typically used between the syllables of a word when that word is divided at the end of a line of text.

Hyphenation is often arbitrary and practices vary. Furthermore, on some of the canvas panels, I have deliberately taken the liberty of hyphenating the word "freedom," even when I did not necessarily need to divide this word "freedom" at the end of a line of text, in order, as an assemblagist painter, to achieve the desired artistic effect of a typographically eccentric poetry through the fine art of painting about the idea of free speech.

Finally, my intent as an assemblagist who is nevertheless a painter and who enjoys both interpreting and representing the idea of free speech with designs in paint is to delight people with paintings whose concern is the idea of free speech.
