This story takes place before Astounding X-Men #03.

Onslaught Island.

Jean Grey stands in front of a team of four prelates. She looks over them, unimpressed by what she sees, but nonetheless convinced that they are enough for the job at hand.

"I have selected you four prelates for a special assignment." Grey begins, "You may remember hearing about a few defeats we've received up north about a rebel faction called 'Team Alpha' recently. Though these have been very small fights, these defeats will undoubtedly add up and possibly cripple our control of the northern portion of the continent if they are not stopped immediately. Your assignment is go to Canada and eliminate these threats. Now, allow me to introduce you to your assignments."

Jean Grey projects and image of a male cyborg.

"This man is Garrison Kane, also known as Weapon Alpha." Grey states, "He is armed with mechanically enhanced extremities. His arms can transform into any weapon he can imagine and his enhanced legs allow him to travel at super speed, as well as increasing his natural agility tenfold."

The image fades to be replaced by that of a wiry red headed man, with hideous scars running across one side of his face.

"Arcade, Team Alpha's strategist and technological genius." Grey continues, "Arcade is known to carry energy weapons in battle and can be a somewhat formable force, despite his appearance. If you fail in this mission and only succeed in killing one man, it should be Arcade. If they lose him, they are crippled."

Arcade's face fades and a blond-haired male, wearing a blue mask across his face appears in front of the gathered Prelates.

"Steve Rogers, code named Glory is a World War II veteran kept young and super strong by the Americans super soldier formula." Grey says, "You may remember him as 'Captain America'. He wields a circular shield with razor sharp edges which he often used to decapitate our fellow mutants. That action is only punishable with death!"

Glory's head is replaced that of another masked man, only this man's mask is as dark as charcoal, and has bright red eyes, which glow with fierce determination.

"Matthew Murdock, known the world over as Daredevil." Grey announces, "Murdock is a trained boxer and ninja and he is proficient in the use of many small weapons."

Daredevil's face disappears and the helmeted head of a man with a moustache appears.

"This is Madison Jefferies, the Matter Master. He is the only mutant member of Team Alpha. A traitor to our kind. He can manipulate metal, plastic, and glass to his will, but is as yet unable to mould living matter. Jefferies is by far the most dangerous member of the team and must be eliminated as soon as possible!" Grey shouts, "You are dismissed!"

The prelates salute Grey and march out of the room.

The Department K Complex, Northwest Territories, Canada.

Garrison Kane punches the metal wall in front of him, denting it severely.

"Detroit was a major set up!" Kane yelled, "They knew we were coming, Steve! How?"

Kane's best friend, Steve Rogers, stood at the opposite end of the room.

"I don't know, but the operation was - for the most part - successful." Rogers answered back, "We didn't lose a single member of our team and rescued most of the humans in the area. The Mutates they sent are all dead. Maybe next time Onslaught will send us a challenge."

Kane turns towards Rogers; his organic-liquid metal arms spouted an Arabic sword blade. Kane lunged at the man known as Glory, pressing him to the wall. Kane put the blade to Steve Rogers' throat.

"What the hell is your major malfunction, Steve?" Kane asks, "For some reason, you've been lacking a certain seriousness about non successful missions. Those were humans! The people we've sworn to protect! Half of them lost their lives because Onslaught's Mutates knew we were coming and you talk about how they were pushovers instead of grieving for the loss of human life!?! You, Steve, are the one true friend I've got, but what you've just said makes me want to hurt you almost as much as I want to hurt those damned Prelates!"

"What's all this discord, I hear?" questions the redheaded man in the doorway of the Conference Room.

"Just talking some sense into Steve here, Matt." Kane replies, dropping Glory to the ground.

Matt senses the tension between the two men is at an all time high and his bionic eyes watch as Glory reaches for his shield and the man known as Weapon Alpha walks away from him. Matt reacts to the situation as quickly as possible, grabbing one of his billy clubs and hurling it at Glory. The club strikes the former United States super soldiers wrist, causing him to yelp in pain. Kane whirls around upon hearing Rogers yelp and stares at both his subordinates.

"This has got to stop." Kane says calmly, despite what events had almost transpired, "If we continue having these internal problems, Team Alpha will crumble and North America will be without hope. Steve, do us all a favour and don't gloat about missions that were nearly blown. That goes for you to, Matt, and everyone else on this team."

Kane storms out of the room and into the main corridor. Matt Murdock looks at Glory trying to think of something to say.

"Don't bother apologising, Daredevil." Glory says, his head lowered in shame, "I deserved it."

"Did you?" Daredevil asks, "Or is Kane becoming too serious with our goals. The minute he sends only the five of us to Onslaught Island to take on the big man himself, I'm gone."

Daredevil leaves the Conference Room and begins to walk to the other end of the complex.

'What has happened to us?' Daredevil thinks as he makes his way through the narrow hallways, 'In the beginning, we were all so cool, calm, and collected about this job. Now we're at each other's throats and suffer unacceptable civilian casualties way too often. Jeez, this is getting out of hand. Might as well check in on Arcade. Maybe he can help dig us our of this mess.'

Daredevil enters a room filled with computers, workbenches, toolboxes, and heavy-duty machinery.

"Arcade!" Daredevil shouts, wondering were his comrade could possibly be.

"Over here, Matt!" called Arcade.

Daredevil makes his way across the large room to find Arcade staring at his latest creation, a huge capsule with huge mechanical legs. A camera and a few chain guns were mounted on the capsule.

"What the hell is that, Arch?" Daredevil asked, perplexed by what he is seeing.

"It's a security robot," said Madison Jefferies - the Matter Master - from behind Daredevil. "How do I know that, Matt? Because I helped build it."

"Yes." Arcade replied, "Mr. Jefferies has the unique talent of making my work easier, Matt."

"Somebody's got to do it!" Jefferies began before he was interrupted by a screeching noise.

"The Alarm!" Daredevil shouts, "Somebody's within a mile of the complex!"

"We've got company, people!" Weapon Alpha's voice boomed over the loudspeaker, "Worse yet, they have prelate bio-signatures. This is a code red alert, report to the Conference Room immediately!"
