HEIDI JACKSON

For a girl who needs a laugh

I shave my legs, I sit down to pee
And I can justify any shopping spree.
Don't go to a barber, but a beauty salon
Can get a massage without a hard-on.

I can balance the checkbook, can pump my own gas
Can talk to my friends about the size of my ass.
My beauty's a masterpiece, and yes, it takes long.
At least I can admit to others when I'm wrong.

I don't drive in circles at any cost,
And I don't have a problem admitting I'm lost.
I never forget an important date
You just gotta deal with it, I'm usually late.

I don't watch movies with lots of gore
Don't need instant replay to remember the score.
I won't lose my hair; I don't get jock itch,
And just cause I'm assertive, Don't call me a bitch.

Don't say to your friends, Oh yeah, I can get her
In your dreams, my dear, I can do better!
Flowers are okay, but jewelry's best.
Would you look at my face, Not at my chest!

I don't have a problem with expressing my feelings
I know when you're lying; you look at the ceiling.
Don't call me a girl, A babe or a chick.
I am a WOMAN, Get it, you prick?!

IF TOMORROW NEVER COMES

If I knew it would be the last time that I'd see you fall asleep,
I would tuck you in more tightly and pray the Lord, your soul to keep,
If I knew it would be the last time that I see you walk out the door,
I would give you a hug and kiss and call you back for one more.
If I knew it would be the last time
I'd hear your voice lifted up in praise,
I would video tape each action and word,
so I could play them back day after day.
If I knew it would be the last time,
I could spare an extra minute or two to stop and say
"I love you," instead of assuming, you would KNOW I do.
If I knew it would be the last time I would be there
to share your day, well I'm sure you'll have so many more,
so I can let just this one slip away.
For surely there's always tomorrow
to make up for an oversight,
and we always get a second chance
to make everything right.
There will always be another day to say our
"I love you' s",
And certainly there's another chance to say our
"Anything I can do's?"
But just in case I might be wrong, and today is all I get,
I'd like to say how much I love you and I hope we never forget,
Tomorrow is not promised to anyone, young or old alike,
And today may be the last chance
you get to hold your loved one tight..
So if you're waiting for tomorrow, why not do it today?
For if tomorrow never comes,
you'll surely regret the day,
That you didn't take that
extra time for a smile, a hug,
or a kiss and you were too busy to grant someone,
what turned out to be their one last wish.
So hold your loved ones close today, whisper in their ear,
Tell them how much you love them
and that you'll always hold them dear,
Take time to say "I'm sorry," "please forgive me,"
"thank you" or "it's okay". And if tomorrow never comes,
you'll have no regrets about today.

TIME
The hands of time are moving. The seconds pass away.
You close your eyes a moment---You've lost another day.

The days are quickly passing. The sunsets soon appear.
And one by one the days add up---You've lost another year.

The years too soon have vanished. And faded from my mind.
And all that's left---an imprint.  Of the life we leave behind.

THE MIRACLE

There is a miracle in the making, and the miracle is you.
You awakening the beauty within; Seeing things in a new light;
Taking the time to make your body healthy;
Make your mark so the right things will happen; Setting the stage
for the pleasures and promises of love;
Developing the special talents
you have been given; Expressing your own creativity
in the way you are living. Know this day that there
has always been a wonderful you, And life will help
you grow if you let it. Believe...tomorrow...
that you will create an even healthier, happier you,
And the best will only get better.

Freshman Year Comes to An End
The scary part being that we've all been hit with change lately,
and it doesn't seem to have come slowly at all.
Do you remember the day you left home? I'm sure that you do.
But I'll bet that what you remember even more clearly,
were the days in the week before you left.
You know...
the days you spent getting addresses and phone numbers
and trying to figure out how to say good bye
to everyone you've loved for as long as you could remember.
Do you remember standing by your best friend's car one night,
after midnight, trying to sum up the meaning of a friendship
you'd managed to maintain through thick and thin for years?
Do you remember how hard that was, to think of how to say
goodbye to that person? It was nearly impossible, wasn't it,
to give them one last hug and turn around and walk inside.
I'll bet part of what you remember was the night before you left,
kissing your boyfriend or girlfriend good bye
for one last time. Just knowing that you'd have to turn around
and walk back inside was almost motivation enough
not to leave. Stepping back to take one last look
at that person you love- it's really scary. And you go,
and you say to yourself that you won't find anyone new.
You won't ever replace your old friends.
You'll never fall in love again. It's really crazy,
what kinds of things can happen when you don't mean for them to.
You get to a new place full of strangers. You meet people who forget you.
You forget people you meet. But sometimes, you come across
some extraordinarily special people. They have tears to shed, too.
They left people behind. They're in love with that guy or girl
back where they used to live, and they all want someone to talk to.
So you talk. Talk is good. You form bonds you never thought you'd form.
You call your old friends and tell them about the new ones.
Sometimes, they don't understand. Sometimes, you hurt their feelings.
Sometimes everyone is just a bit jealous.
You miss your boyfriend. Or your girlfriend.
One day you're sitting in a park, thinking about all that stuff
you really didn't want to leave, and a stranger sits down near you.
Sometimes that person stays a stranger. Other times you talk to him.
Or you talk to her. Sometimes you experience things
you didn't want to ever happen. Sometimes you're interested in that person
who isn't your boyfriend at home. Or your girlfriend.
Sometimes college is really complicated. Sometimes you stay together.
Other times you break up. Sometimes you think you've done
the wrong thing, by coming so far away from home.
And sometimes when you start thinking like this,
its time to make a change. So when this happens,
you sit down, put The Eagles in the stereo, turn on "Sad Cafe,"
and wonder if you still recall all the faces from your past.
If you do, you're doing well. So, you pick up the phone,
and you call them all, just to say, "Hi, I love you,
I'm thinking about you." And then just as an afterthought,
you say, "You know, I'm really learning a lot from college.
I wish you'd come here to visit all of my friends.
They're very important to me, and I think they'd love you.
You'd love them." Because after all, this is college.
College is a growing experience. Growing experiences cause change.
Change is hard. But it makes you stronger. Call your mom.
Call your best friend. Call your boyfriend.
Or your girlfriend. Or your ex,
if that's how it worked out. Tell them hello.
Tell them you miss them. Tell them you love them.
And then, turn off the stereo. Leave your dorm room.
Go to a friend's room, give them a big hug,
and say, "Thank you so much for being here.
I love you." I promise you'll feel better.

Slow Dance
Have you ever watched kids on a merry-go-round?
Or listened to the rain  slapping on the ground?
Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight?
Or gazed at the sun into the fading night?
You better slow down. Don't dance so fast. Time is short.
The music won't last. Do you run through each day
On the fly? When you ask "How are you?"
Do you hear the reply? When the day is done,
With the next hundred chores-Running through your head?
You'd better slow down. Don't dance so fast. Time is short.
The music won't last. Ever told your child,
We'll do it tomorrow? And in your haste, Not see his sorrow?
Ever lost touch, Let a good friendship die
'Cause you never had time To call and say "Hi"?
You'd better slow down. Don't dance so fast. Time is short.
The music won't last.
When you run so fast to get somewhere
You miss half the fun of getting there.
When you worry and hurry through your day,
It is like an unopened gift....
Thrown away. Life is not a race.
Do take it slower Hear the music...
Before the song is over.

Remember when:
You were born a daughter.
you looked up to your mother. you looked up to your father.
you looked up to everyone. you wanted to be a princess.
you wanted to own a horse. you wanted your brother to be a horse.
you wanted to wear pink. you never wanted to wear pink.
you wanted to be a veterinarian. you wanted to be president.
you wanted to be the president's veterinarian.
you were picked last for the team. you were the best one on the team.
you refused to be on the team. you wanted to do well in algebra.
you hid during algebra. you wanted boys to notice you.
you were afraid the boys would notice you. you started to get acne.
you started to get breasts. you started to get acne that was
bigger than your breasts. you wouldn't wear a bra.
you couldn't wait to wear a bra. you couldn't fit into a bra.
you didn't like the way you looked.
you didn't like the way your parents looked.
you didn't want to grow up. you had your first best friend.
you had your first date. you spent hours on the telephone.
you got kissed. you got to kiss back. you didn't go to the prom.
you went to the prom with the wrong person.
you spent hours on the telephone.
you fell in love. you fell in love. you fell in love.
you lost your best friend. you lost your other best friend.
you really fell in love. you became a steady girlfriend.
you became a significant other. you became significant to yourself.
sooner or later, you start to take yourself seriously.
you know when you need a break. you know when you need a rest.
you know what to get worked up about, and what to get rid of and you know
when it's time to take care of yourself, for yourself to do something that makes you stronger, faster, more confident. because you know it's never too. late to live life and never too late to change one.

College
I never knew that when I said goodbye to all of my friends
and packed up my stuff to come here that I was ending
one part of my life with them. I never knew how tighter
the hugs would be and how wonderful our laughter together
would sound when we next got together. I didn't think that
when I first came to university that I would feel guilty
for making new friends, like I had deserted my old ones.
I also didn't know how special these new friends
would become, but for different reasons
than my old ones. You see, friends from back home
see you differently than your university friends.
You just call each other up when it's a good time
and you all go out somewhere together. You hang together and
then go to your respective homes. And when you fight,
well, you've got other friends to be with and you can avoid these friends.
But with friends at university it is different.
You live with them. They see you when you've just woken up
from the deepest sleep of your life, after you've just had
your heart completely broken and before the hardest exam of your life.
If you fight with one of them, you make up as soon as you can,
because you realize that being mad at each other is pointless;
besides, who will you have dinner with?
It is a strange balance, these friends at home,
and these friends at university.
One is a group of people who prepared you
for where you are today, the other is a group of people
who have come to mean more to you
in four months than some people did in five years.
You love them both and you love them for different reasons.
They don't know each other, but they share a common bond: you.
You are what unites them together
and makes them special people. Sometimes you forget
to let them know how special they are to you
because it's so easy to forget with all the stress and confusion around you.
With your friends from both home and school,
you have shared thoughts, aspirations, hugs,
laughter, sorrow, drinks, tears, even more hugs and many special times.
These are the people who know you the best.
Sometimes, they become more important than family,
because they ARE a family. A family that supports, nurtures,
loves, fights and shares together. A family you often take for granted.
Whether you are together or far away, these people hold an integral part in your life. I never knew that when I came to university
that I would find people like the ones I have found
that I could call my friends.
Nor did I know how much I would look forward to the times
when I was back with my other friends, too. There are some things
that you take for granted but hopefully it will never be any of you,
these people in my life that enrich and improve it.

MEMORY
It is not often someone comes along to make our lives so bright,
And sometimes we may not understand should
they leave in the still of the night.
But we have precious memories of all the times
that together we've laughed and we've loved,
And how thankful we are for having been given
such a wonderful gift from above.
Though he can no longer share our joys, our hopes, or even our pain,
He is always with us for deep in our hearts our love shall forever remain.
We should not grieve in the times we haven't, but rejoice in those times that we've had.
For of the times we shared in our years together,
our hearts are eternally glad.
So let us remember with each passing day,
with every memory
our minds can recall. It's better to have had him, loved him, and lost him,
than to have never had him at all.

Anyone can stand by you when you are right
but a Friend will stand by you even when you are wrong...
A simple friend identifies himself when he calls.
A real friend doesn't have to.
A simple friend opens a conversations
with a full news bulletin on his life.
A real friend says, "What's new with you?"
A simple friend thinks the problems you whine about are recent.
A real friend says, "You've been whining
about the same thing for 14 years.
Get off your duff and do something about it."
A simple friend has never seen you cry.
A real friend has shoulders soggy from your tears.
A simple friend doesn't know your parents' first names.
A real friend has their phone numbers in his address book.
A simple friend brings a bottle of wine to your party.
A real friend comes early to help you cook and stays late to help you clean.
A simple friend hates it when you call after he has gone to bed.
A real friend asks you why you took so long to call.
A simple friend seeks to talk with you about your problems.
A real friend seeks to help your with your problems.
A simple friend wonders about your romantic history.
A real friend could blackmail you with it.
A simple friend, when visiting, acts like a guest.
A real friend opens your refrigerator
and helps himself.
A simple friend thinks the friendship is over
when you have an argument.
A real friend knows that it's not a friendship
until after you've had a fight.
A simple friend expects you to always be there for them.
A real friend expects to always be there for you!

Life Life isn't about keeping score. It's not about how many friends you have
Or how accepted you are. Not about if you have plans this weekend
or if you're alone. It isn't about whom you're dating,
whom you used to date, and how many people you've dated,
or if you haven't been with anyone at all.

It isn't about who your family is or how much money they have
Or what kind of car you drive. Or where you are sent to school.
It's not about how beautiful or ugly you are.
Or what clothes you wear, what shoes you have on,
or what kind of music you listen to.

It's not about if your hair is blonde, red, black, or brown
Or if your skin is too light or too dark. Not about what grades you get,
how smart you are, how smart everybody else thinks you are,
or how smart standardized tests say you are.

It's not about what clubs you're in or how good you are at sports.
It's not about representing your whole being on a piece of paper and
Seeing who will accept the written you.

LIFE JUST ISN'T.

But, life is about whom you love and whom you hurt.
It's about whom you make happy or unhappy purposefully.
It's about keeping or betraying trust. Its about friendship,
used as sanctity or a weapon.

It's about what you say and mean, maybe hurtful, maybe heartening..
About starting rumors and contributing to petty gossip.
It's about what judgments you pass and why.
And who your judgments are spread to.

It's about whom you've ignored with full control and intention.
It's about jealousy, fear, ignorance, and revenge.
It's about carrying inner hate and love,
letting it grow, and spreading it.

But most of all, it's about using your life to touch
or poison other people's hearts in such a way that could have never occurred alone.
Only you choose the way those hearts are affected,
and those choices are what life's all about.
