Dahil sa iba't ibang lugar siya lumaki, mayaman siya sa karanasan. Iba't iba rin ang buhay ng kanyang mga kalaro at kababata--- may magsasaka, mangingisda, manggagawa, relihiyoso, istambay sa kanto, at iba pang nakasalamuha.
Sa sariling pagsisikap, nakatapos ng Bachelor of Fine Arts at M.A. Philippine Literature sa U.P. Naging Professor ng Literatura sa De La Salle University noong 1981 hanggang 1984. Ang balak niyang mag-Ph.D. ay inabala ng pagiging aktibo sa larangan ng paglikha ng makabuluhang awiting Pilipino. Dahil ang kanyang mga awit ay salamin ng kalagayang panlipunan, siya na ngayon ang pinag-aaralan. Ang kanyang mga awit ay ginagamit sa mga doctoral thesis ng mga iskolar ng U.P., Ateneo at ng iba pang mga pamantasan.
Hangga ngayon, patuloy pa rin si Heber sa adhikang mapaunlad ang Kulturang Maka-Pilipino lalo na sa paglikha ng makabuluhan at makatotohanang mga awit. Sabi niya--- "Ang awit ang pinakamabisang tulay tungo sa kaisipan at puso ng tao, lalo na sa mga kabataan. Kayat ito ang tulay na dapat pagtawiran ng mga proyektong pangkabataan tungo sa kaunlaran ng isang lipunan."

Pioneered relevance in contemporary songs reflecting socio-political issues of the times. Heber's songs were the subject of M.A. and Ph.D. theses and dissertation papers by scholars from U.P., Ateneo and other universities.
