Turned Blackwalnut Bud Vase with Brass Insert
Turned Replica of a Karuk Sipnuk (Lidded Trinket Basket)
The Karuk Tribe of California
have lived along the Klamath River
for more than a thousand years,
and are a unique people in many ways.
They are world reknown in the art of basketry,
From huge storage baskets, to tiny miniatures, hats,
and even ones that held water and were cooked in,
the beauty and quality is unsurpassed.
Woven from gathered and worked materials
such as; willow and hazel sticks, bear grass,
ferns, and even porcupine quills..they are
much sought and prized treasures, one like my
wooden replica would sell for around $800.00
if you can find one to buy..
I have made several replicas of these baskets
called sipnuks (seep - nukes) or lidded trinket or
gift baskets and they have been
well recieved by the local Karuk, to my
pleasure and honor, and so I will continue
to turn more of these unique replicas.
I turn them out of local redwood, cedar, and myrtle
woods, each as unique in size, shape, and patterns
as the ones I model them after.
Pencil Drawing of a 1890 Karuk
Cedar Plank House near Somes Bar CA.
The traditional home of the Karuk,
was made of cedar planking, and poles,
constructed over a pit, that was
the main living area, while a ground
level shelf area was left for storage
and other uses. The round entry
was made of a diameter small enough
to prevent adult bears from entering.
