DISCLAIMER:

Although I tried very hard not to include any virus ( I mean computer virus, do not be afraid of AIDS etc.) in the fonts file, but if you find something malicious, that could be due to leakage since no practical system is perfect and it is your responsbilty to get rid of that contamination as well as not to propogate it further.

I do not claim these Installation Instructions to be accurate or perfect although when I followed them no harm, physically or mentally was done neither to me nor my PC showed any sign of damage (smoke etc. from the back of monitor or some Gharrrrr..gharrr sound from the processor). Well, if in any case you face any such situation, I would not be responsible at all. What I am trying to say is fiddle with your smoothely running PC at your own risk.

Installing True Type Fonts and making them operational is somewhat trickey. Please follow the instruction carefully and in case of any doubt or/and further question please follow this link.
Eevn after taking pain of installing TT fonts in Linux, some of these fonts may not work but most of them will certainly. Shusha and Udgam do not work with this method. For Udgam fonts follow the instructions given at www.udgam.com and for Shusha fonts, instructions are given at the end of this page.

1. Unzip the file 'hindifonts.zip'.
2. Get 'root' capability and then make a directory hindifonts

        $ su -
        $ mkdir -p /usr/local/share/fonts/hindifonts
        $ cd /usr/local/share/fonts/hindifonts
3. Convert upper case font names to lower case
        $ for i in * ; do [ -f $i ] && mv -i $i `echo $i | tr '[A-Z]' '[a-z]'`; done;
4. If you are using 'xfs' (RedHat based distribution) then ther are two ways to install these fonts. For other distributions please follow this link.
(a) Open '/etc/X11/fs/config' file
        $ vi /etc/X11/fs/config
and add '/usr/local/share/fonts/hindifonts' to the file. After addition the file should look like this--
        catalogue = /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled,
                  /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi:unscaled,
                  /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled,
                  /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1,
                  /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo,
                  /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc,
                  /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi,
                  /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi,
                  /usr/local/share/fonts/hindifonts

(b) Open '/etc/X11/XF86Config'

        $ vi /etc/X11/XF86Config
and add '/usr/local/share/fonts/hindifonts' to the file. After addition the file should look like this--
#    FontPath   "unix/:-1"
     FontPath     "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled"
     FontPath     "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled"
     FontPath     "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc"
     FontPath     "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1"
     FontPath     "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo"
     FontPath     "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/webfonts"
     FontPath     "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi"
     FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/default/TrueType"
     FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/default/Type1"
     FontPath     "/usr/local/share/fonts/hindifonts"
IMP=Do not miss the commented '# FontPath "unix/:-1" ' line.
