This was written for a dear person following the loss of their grand father.

I lit a candle in church today, in memory of whose been.
"For who do you pray my son", the priest asked so mild.
"A person I have never met, and their family I've never seen.
Someone who meant so much to one I know, their grandchild.

To help me remember the light of Christ in the candle flame.
To concentrate my prayers and thoughts though far they be.
And hope that the memory of joy, not fade but always gain.
And that the path is good, and angels walk with he.

Therefore you see, that is why I light this wax
For even though I can not be there to share
With the wonders of computers and fax
There is nothing better than words and a hug

And to say Arthur, I lit a candle for thee."

Betjeman As I sit I lit a candle Made a choice
A common thing
Everyday I look
we have spent Here alone
Hands of silk With so many On this bright Hardly realize
Lonely night Shouted and screamed since from I watch you
we met upon a distant day You are pretty
(that moment)
The day I met you To sit opposite (the train)
