INTRODUCTION

The French-American Collaborative will hold its Third European “Photography as an Art – The making and Meaning of Images” Workshop in Versailles, France from August 13-19, 2000, in conjunction with The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley College. In previous years, we have held successful workshops in Cambridge, in Aix-en-Provence (France) and in Prague (the Czech Republic) and Florence, Italy. Our workshops are suitable for beginners/intermediates  who have an avid interest in the arts and who wish to develop visual skills in image making to enhance their aesthetic skills in art and photography. Our European teaching sites are selected for their natural beauty and for their historical interest, since work assignments are based on local history, culture and art. The photographic image is used as the basis for studying artistic composition and color, and for analyzing the aesthetics and psychology of vision and seeing. The course is as much about studying art as it is about photography. It is therefore suitable for people who have a primary interest in aesthetics, psychology and cultural history, but who do not necessarily have strong skills in painting or sculpture. However, our workshops have included painters, sculptors, teachers, digital imaging professionals and other artists who need to hone their skills by studying images through another medium.

Though no previous experience is necessary and artistic temperament and an enthusiasm for learning are requirements. Only basic camera equipment consisting of a single-lens reflex camera and slide film is required. Optional lenses, a tripod and flash equipment are helpful but not essential. Advice regarding equipment is available in writing or on the telephone from the principal instructor, Regis de Silva. This intensive workshop has 2 components: a daily three hour classroom instruction period in the morning and afternoon or evening sessions of self-guided shooting. Images are made on Ektachrome slide film for processing within 24 hours, so that images can be projected the next day for critiques by the instructors and fellow students. Students enjoy the daily critiques which are held in a friendly and supportive environment. The critiques are heavily influenced by current theories in the visual arts the psychology of perception and why we as humans need to make and record images. The introductory classes with cover technical aspects of camera and film technology, the process of regulating light via shutter speed and aperture control, and options for processing and printing images in order to obtain the best results from your camera. There will be no darkroom work. Our students in the past have, by the end of the week, learned the basics of photography and are able to create images of artistic merit.

The most enjoyable part of the course for me, our instructors and for the class is the human contact between strangers who come together for an artistic purpose, and who enjoy the process of learning in a supportive and encouraging environment, as we draw on the rich culture, art and traditions of the environment we will be working in. Florence provides an exemplary situation in which to study art, sculpture and architecture through the medium of photography.

VERSAILLES/PARIS

Versailles is a small sophisticated town on the outskirts of Paris with art galleries, book and antique shops and arcades and designer furniture and clothing shops. Versailles has excellent connections by rail and bus to Paris, which is about 15 min by train, where one can visit the usual tourist sites such as the Louvre Museum, the Arc d'Triomphe, the Champs Elysees and the Place de la Concorde. Day trips may be made to the gardens at Giverny where Monet lived and worked, and to Auvers-sur-Oise where van Gogh lived the last 3 months of his life before he died in 1890. We will be staying at a small charming hotel located in the heart of Versailles and recently completely refurbished The Hotel la Résidence du Berry, only 5 minutes walk from the world-renowned Palace and park of Versailles and a few minutes from the train station. The Residence, named for the Duchess du Berry, offers today a perfect blend of original XVIIIth century character together with the comfort of a modern hotel, overlooks a charming private garden. All rooms are all equipped with bath or shower, toilets, hairdryers, direct dial telephone, radio and cable television, and together with the lovely glass veranda in the traditional Versailles style. A small Business Center equipped with fax and photocopy facilities, and computers with Internet and e-mail connections are available.

The centerpiece of Versailles is the magnificent Chateau de Versailles, which consists of the main chateau and the smaller Grand Trianon and the Petit Trianon, and very extensive and beautiful gardens. The grounds are decorated with magnificent sculptures. In 1999, President Jacques Chirac opened the Trianon sous Bois in the Grand Trianon to the public. These galleries and the residence where visiting heads of state and royalty stay during visits to the French Republic. The great chateau, built by King Louis the XIV, The Sun King, is the repository of paintings by Veronese, Lemoyne and Le Brun, sculptures by Tuby, Pajou, Giradon and other artists, object d'art, decorative pieces, tapestries and a coach museum, among other attractions.
