1887-1973. Marine at the beginning of the war he is promoted in 1942 commander of the Marine forces in the Solomon. He leads the Marines to the victory in Guadalcanal. Then he comes back to the USA to instruct the Marine amphibic corps and then comes back in the Pacific just in time to see the reconquest of Bougainville. In 1944 general Vandegrift becomes chief commander of the Marine corps.
