It was incredibly hot.  This was the only time while I was in Vietnam that they let us go out without our flackjackets, hoping to hold the heat casualities down.   A flackjacket on a hot day was like wearing a down coat it seemed like, they trapped an incredible amount of heat.  But during the monsoon I often slept in mine for just that reason.  Anyway, we still had several heat casualities.

Sgt. William Adams mentioned in the first few lines was on his second tour.  During his first he had been in this area.  He had told us it was a rough place, and so it turned out to be.  The terrain was terrible.  Really steep hills and thick brush.  The NVA/VC had been here in force for years and had prepared positions everywhere.   The Army, which had had this area for a good while had done little or no patrolling.  I suppose it was about as close to an ideal situation for the NVA as they could hope for.

The other Marine killed when Sgt. Adams was killed was Kennith Jerrell.  The Cunningham mentioned is Steve Cunningham.  He had only been with Golf company for a few days.  I remember talking to him just before he was killed and thinking this was someone I could be friends with.  Recently I have been in contact with one of his brothers.

I mention at the bottom of the page that I saw my first live gook.  That isn't true.  Just before Oklahoma Hills in April I saw some around Hill 22 and I saw a couple on the operation.

"105's" is artillery
