The 26th and the 29th of August were without a doubt the two worst days of my tour in Vietnam.  The first mortar (on the evening of the 26th) round hit a good distance off to one side of the right flank where I was.  Hayward Peliholani was point on the flank, Richard Conway was second, and I was third.  This first round killed Hayward and wounded Conway pretty badly.  Peliholani and Conway were left out all night.

I was looking right at Darrell Smith when he lost both of his legs and Joesph Pinto was killed.  Later I saw Smith being carried back to the medavac area.  His right leg was gone and the left was lying along side his thigh, attached only by a small strip of skin.  He was awake and seemed calm, shock I guess.

There seemed to be wounded men wandering around everywhere.
