John F. Pedro on the left and Bob Muth on the right   This was taken at LZ Ross, probably in September 1969.  The very faint hills just over Pedro's right shoulder mark the east side of Hiep Duc Valley where first platoon (actually all of Golf company) was shot up so badly the 23rd - 29th of August.  There were 42 of us in 1st Platoon on the 23rd.  During the next few days we picked up 9 more men.  By midnight of the 29th there were 12 of us left.

I beleive Pedro made it home alright, though all I know for sure is that his name isn't on the wall.

His grandfather was a Portugese sailer that was shipwrecked on Samoa and, evidently recognizing a good thing when he washes up on it, decided to stay.  Pedro was part of a whole slug of Hawaiians we picked up after Oklahoma Hills.  They were a great bunch, if you couldn't have a good time with them you just couldn't have a good time.  As far as I know Pedro was the only one of them to make it home ok.  He was a good, dependable man.  I hope life has been equally good to him, he deserves it.

January 7, 2001.  Just got off the phone with Glenn Denton.  Glenn was with Golf's first platoon in 1969.  After Vietnam he was stationed at Camp Pendleton and met Pedro's brother who had joined the Corps.  He told Glenn that Pedro did not deal with life well after Vietnam.  He had gone into the Jungle in Hawaii and was more or less living there as a total recluse.  That was several years ago, so perhaps he is doing better now.

Looks like this was taken at Hill 22.

From left to right: Bailey, Rich Maus, Wilson, Boyd, Tony Hatfield.  Tony would be wounded in April 1969 while on Operation Oklahoma hills.
Walter "Corkey" Junger.  Corkey was a Corpsman with Golf company.  He was killed April 15, 1969, shortly after joining us.  We were on Operation Oklahoma Hills and had just found a small NVA base.  There was a short firefight when we walked in.  Our pointman, Steve Lewis, walked up on two gooks walking the other way on the trail we were following.  Steve got a slight wound in the shoulder and the NVA ran off.  That night they came back and hit us.  We had three killed and a couple wounded.  Corkey was killed going to the aid of one of our wounded.
