Captain John (Osawatomie) Brown

Old John Brown was a friend of the family. He was born May 09, 1800 in Terrington, Connecticut. For those who don't know their history... John Brown went to Harpers Ferry to incite freedom for all. The trip was ill fated and he died by hanging December 02, 1859 in Charles Town, Virginia. John invited my second great-granduncle Col. Samuel Newitt Wood to go to Harpers Ferry with him. Sam refused the invitation because he had several other irons in the fire. While the Honorable Sam N. Wood was representing Wise county, Kansas in the State Legislature, the hanging of John Brown aroused the indignation of all liberty-loving people. So... Sam had a bill passed by which the name of the county was changed from Wise (Wise was the Governor of Virginia and had signed the death warrant for John Brown) to Morris, in honor of Thomas Morris, who was the United States Senator from Ohio.
