John Townsend

John Townsend is my seventh great-grandfather. To the best of my knowledge he never went to war. So, I guess you are wondering why he is listed as a Freedom Fighter. Well... it's because of his contribution toward American history and liberty. You see, he use to own a bit of land in the city of Philadelphia. When he died, his son and daughter-in-law sold it to trustees of Philadelphia, to be used as part of what is now known as State House Square. The State House which is located on State House Square is best known as Independence Hall.

DEED

6 February 1769: Charles Townsend of Philadelphia, Carter and Abigail his wife, to Joseph Fox and six others, Trustees of the State House.

This shows that John Townsend died intestate, seized of a part of the above lot, leaving issue four sons and five daughters, Stephen being the eldest and James, Joseph and Charles being the younger sons: and Elizabeth, Sarah, Mary, Jane, and Rachel the daughters, who intermarried with Alexander Forman, Owen Thomas, John Kennard, Thomas Humphreys and William Adams. Stephen Townsend being entitled to a double share, or two tenths of the same, he and the others release to Charles Townsend their nine-tenths of a part of a lot, 67 feet front on Walnut Street and running back 46 feet; bounded to the westward by another part (now conveyed to James Townsend) by release dated 24 January 1743.

Charles Townsend and wife, for f385, convey their part to the trustees for the use of State House Square. Charles made his letters J6,207.
