I'd really like to hear from/about WO's Peyton, Horn, Mittendorf, Estes, Holland, Walthall, Olive, Thorn, Sherman, Branch, Xerxes, Norton, Reipe, and commissoned types like Tom Gardner, Torres, S ufley, et al. I took the summer off from researching our unit history but I'm back at it. All Bob has to do is bring up an old name and BANG the wheels start turning and I find a dozen more to go with it. Croc gunner Butch Lammers. He flew alot with SP/5 Doublejeff. Th t was a crewchief. I think he was there all of 1967 and 1968. He made John Wayne look like a wos boy. He stayed an extra month so he would get his 40th Air Medal. Don Pemberton was in the prop and rotor shop when I first got to Nam. He was the one who con inced me to start flying. He was shot down in May 1968 while covering us on a LRRP extraction. His gunner was John Eggilthrope {spelling?} He would return in April 1969 for another tour. Mr. Becker,"Animal" would go in after them. SP/5 Heintz and SP/4 Hah and Mr. Murray were with him on that day. Sgt. Greg Bilbe. Long time Croc crewchief. That's him and me pictured on Dan Lukken's web-site. SP/5 Weissman. Another 24 month man. Big farm boy from Neb. Sgt. Turk. Crewchief in second flight. Became platoon sg . over first flight in May 68 until he was caught up in Deros shuffle to 155th AHC in Sept. 68. SP/5 Pershing Nelson. He was also in prop and rotor shop. End up in second flight. Gene Touchstone. Second flight and Crocs. His ship was always around when we stepped into it at Dak To or in the Plei-Trap. SP/4 Vedder. Went thur gunners school with Eddie Sumpter. Was gunner with "Shifty" on Gator 390. Took over 390 after "Shifty" was killed. Ended up getting shot down in July 1969 while on a "Mike Force" insert tion.Evaced to Japan. Never did find out how he did. I still cann't remember the crewchief from second flight who was wounded the same day "Shifty" was killed. I thought he was with Bob Kilpatrick and Jim Johnson at Dak TO as RON wrench. We need more guys to make pre-flight. Need help to fill in the blanks from thirty years ago. Be Back later.

Ron, you are amazing. Cece, what a guy. Go anywhere, do anything, no big deal. Brass. Sam Stella? How many extensions? Ended up underneath at least one ship. How about Eggy? Gary Eggleston, had a machete so sharp you could shave with it. Used it too, at least one time I saw, to chop his way into an extraction. "Ti-ti" Sempek, how long was he there? Forever? He was in our flight. Hit at least once, right? One up through his foot? Butch Lammers, the Croc gunner, great guy, there from long before the battle of Dak To, through Tet, right into the following Fall... he and I spent a lot of time together RON in Dak To, Fall of 1969, just before he left. Stories you can't believe. Out on the pylon clearing a minigun jam when they let a rocket go... zowwee. Jimmy Johnson let us know just recently that Butch died in the early 1970s, shortly after another tour, the last one, that one as an MP with the 4th Div... Speaking of Jimmy Johnson, Croc CE, TI, another one-of-a-kind, in Vietnam for three times (or more) more than most. We've found him; he's back. There as long as Davey Silk maybe? John "Shifty" Schiffhauer? The wonderful letter that his wife Cindy wrote to everyone in the Company after he was killed... Bill Frakes, (Croc gunner) monster of a man, fell off the back of an MP jeep, let the jeep back up and run over him so the rest of us (all under "arrest" at Dak To) could get away, then fled the other way while the MPs were chasing us... he gave me his gr y AF flight suit when he left, the tailors cut more out of it than they left in it to make it fit me. Wouldn't have to do that now... Dana and Muth, just great guys... we were getting hit with the ricky rifle at Polei Kleng in March 69, no place to hide, Dana's on his back in an old latrine trench near me, scooping out all kinds of nasty stuff and dropping his backside back into the hol between rounds. I say "Dana, that's a slit trench!" He says, "I don't give a *hit, it's a hole, isn't it?" and keeps digging with both hands. Mike "Shakey" Curran? Electrician who flew as much as most gunners towards the end of his gig? Got busted (again) for whacking an officer who was poking him in the chest? Bobby Copher, the gunner who trained me to be a crew chief, after he left for home, his Mom sent me a whole box of wax and cleaners and all that kind of stuff so I could keep "his" ship in good shape... Keep writing this stuff, Ron. Maybe we'll get a few others to throw in what they remember? Damn, I hope so.

I return to find new members of our unit, it gladdens me to see that so many are willing to remember. I spent many years trying to forget as I guess we all did. I have a formal appology to submit to all of the guys that I served with from 68 to 70. I w s a pothead, smoked alot while off duty but got to a point that I flew stoned. That was risking the lives of people I loved and although I can't change the past I can appologize for my mistakes. I love the 119th, it has been my one enduring memory over the years, all the good peoples, crews, pilots, maintenance. If any of you remember Skid, the dog that used to make morning formations, I have a picture of him. He went out the door of my chopper while on a mail run along with a bag of mail. I returned o Vietnam in 1970 with the 101st Avn Bn at Camp Eagle and flew the Ai Shau, I still think that the Plei Trap was worse. Thanks for letting me get this off my mind, I love each and every one of you and will never forget the 119th.

I love the sight, but all the info isn't exactly accurate. I don't know how much research was done or where the info came from, but there is a lot missing between the beginning and the end. The 119th was made great by the guys that taught me, and their t me is completely omitted. Cpt Jon Jon Van Leer, Cpt Tom Weller, Peanut, Jack Cloud, Vickery, Jerry Miller, Mike Menard, MacDonald, Chip Banish, Orville (Scottie) Scott, Pappy Clark, Maj Fernald (Big John), Maj Harris (Tea and Crumpets), Robert (Dufflebag Duffy, Mark (Pigpen) Garrison, Hugh (Golly Golly) Gollogoly, Hudkins, Fergie, Gary (Lurch) Morrison, and some great back seat guys; Fast Eddie Tadeo, Gino Cabigas, Humphries, Chico, Larry (Groovy) Blanton, James Brown, Ernie Welch, Sgt Davis, Ed Wieseman Ramsey, and I'm sure many others I'm omitting. These are the guys that learned it the hard way and passed it on to us. It would really be great to see some of their stories in the history. Most of them went through Tet of 68 and the A Shau Valley. Tru y no fun and a miracle to survive. Thanks for all you've done so far.

Prior to Maj. Fernald our Co was Maj. Cary. He was a welcome change from Maj. Potter who was in command when I came into the 1st Flight Platoon. Glad to see so many names appearing in the log book. This past summer I went to Washington DC to research some of our unit's history. Some where between Camp Holloway,Camp Radcliff and DC the history of 1968 and 1969 were lost. I did find some very interesting stuff in the files of the 4th Inf. If anybody is interested drop me a line.

Excellent stuff and brings back a lot of memories. Would be nice to see more history from some of the earlier years. The Command page leaves out one the CO's that was right up there with Maj. Conrad, Major John P. (Big John) Fernald. He was awesome and eserves mention in any history of the 119th. His predecessor is also omitted. I'm the sister of Martin Given who was killed in Pleiku along with Billie Joe Ontis. It has taken me over 30 years to try to connect with anyone who may have known Marty. Losing him was a tremendous loss to our family. He was the oldest of 8 children - t o of whom were born just 7 months before he was killed - so they never had the chance to know him. But, he was my best friend growing up and I have buried the hurt for a long, long time. I know he did not die in vain nor did thousands of others who gave t eir lives so we could live better. I would love to have anyone who did know him write me. My family would love to have copies of pictures if you have any. Like the rest of us, he did not like having his picture taken so we have very few. I would also l ke to just "talk" to anyone who knew Marty. He was (and still is) so very special to me. I would like to be able to contact some of the crewmembers that flew with me in the Crocs, during this time period. The two tail numbers that I flew as an AC were '462' and '564'. I remember that the CE on '462' was 'big Ed', and the gunner was 'Geno'. As well as I can remember, they were on board when we had to jettison the rocket pods and extract the LRRP team, callsign M24. The CE on '564' was 'Chico' Guerro. He visited me in Qui Nhon hospital after I was wounded and brought me the cyclic grip from 564'.

I CAME AS NEW GUY IN NOV 1968, WAS ASSIGNED TO A LIFT PLATOON AND SENT TO QUI NHON TO SUPPORT THE ROKS. MY PLATOON LEADER WAS LT CARL ROCK (HIS REAL NAME) AND HIS SECOND IN COMMAND WAS LT NICK BURKE(NICKNAME STONEY). WE MOVED BACK TO PLEIKO,AT CAMP HOLL WAY, TO SUPPORT THE 4TH DIV, WHERE I LEARNED THAT SLICKS WERE NOT FOR ME. I WENT TO THE GUN PLATOON TO FLY CHARLIE MODELS, THE FINEST GUNSHIP TO EVER FLY. (SCREW THOSE AIR CONDITIONED, OXYGEN BREATHING, SCAS CONTROLLED, "ARE THERE ANY BAD GUYS IN THE A EA?", COBRA DRIVERS. DOES THE TERM 'ROCKET MOTOR BURN-OUT' MEAN ANYTHING TO YOU?). AT ANY RATE, I WENT ON TO FURTHER FAME AND GLORY TO GET SHOT UP FLYING A SLICK MISSION, ON THE GROUND, WHILE BEING BRIEFED FOR A TROOP EXTRACTION. YOU SEE, THE PREVIOUS IGHT, THERE WAS A DISCUSSION AS TO WHO WAS THE BETTER PILOT, A CROC OR A SLICK DRIVER. SO, AS CROC '7', IT WAS MY DUTY TO UPHOLD THE HONOR OF THE GUN PLATOON. I STILL HAVE NOT LEARNED TO KEEP MY MOUTH SHUT. FRANKLY, I'M SICK ABOUT THE WAR AND THE NUMBE OF MEN FROM MY GENERATION THAT WERE NEEDLESSLY KILLED AND WOUNDED. HOWEVER, WHEN I THINK BACK ABOUT THE 119TH, I'M FILLED WITH PRIDE. I LOVE YOU GUYS.

Wow! I can't believe there is a WWW site for the 119th AHC. I was happy to find it. Was a pilot and then AC (Gator 376). Paul "Animal" Becker was one of my best friends. John Kinzel was my mentor, and I always asked to fly with him on a permanent basis. Also flew with Lt. "Star Gazer" until I made AC. Don Scalf gave me his ship when he went home (Boo Boo A Go Go II - UH-1H) and I became an AC. apologize for not remembering my crew chief and gunner's names. They were the absolute BEST in my mind. In all these years there was *one* name I did remember. He was a real "bad ass" I believe from California. He could make an M-60 cook, which is pr bably why I never forgot him. I see he even has a page here. His name is Eric Raits! Raits, I never forgot you! Raymond Chase was in my flight class of 67-13 and was my roommate until he went to the Croc's. He was KIA. One last thing. There is one uy I remember **most** of all. I think about him every day and he never knows. His name is Michael Murray. He was the pilot that saved all our lives that day when my arm was blown off the cyclic stick and were were in a bomb crater of bamboo and we wer rolling over to the left. He got us out and safely. I kinda thanked him when I was in Pleiku Hospital, but I always thought it was not enough. So, Mike, if you see this, THANK YOU. I also had a dog. Her name was RT Rat. She was killed the day I was ounded. Sorry for rambling. I still cannot believe a 119th AHC WWW site!!! Well done on the site! And, THANK YOU!!!!!! Oh, yeah, Lt. Star Gazer gave me the Puddin' name. It's another long story....

He was the Maint Officer. the 119th was a grat unit at that time. lots of good memories. I returned to Vietnam with the 25th Inf. CuChi in 1966/67. seved as Tank Commander. latter tranfered to A co 25th Aviation as Door Gunner..

It is strange that I remember almost every minute of the first tour with the 119th and very little of the second tour with the 147th Hillclimber. It wasn't just the intensity of the combat, but the character of the crews and gunts at that point in time. We thought we could win that damn war and we had every intention of doing that. Good men, good machines, and good leadership. The elements were there and then the damn politics of the times kicked in. That second tour was a get home tour for me. No one cared about winning just building numbers. I love you guys. I miss all of you. email me if you remember to jwest4801@aol.com I would love to hear from you. I won't forget. Jim Croc 2

Enjoyed "going back in time" on your web page...those were the good ol' days. I flew A/C as "Gator 373" with a nickname of "California Dreamer" (also the nose art on my H-model). This ship crashed 9-2-67 with WOs Jim Daniels and Jim Bosley (both KIA) at t e controls on a day I was not flying. Saw a couple names in the Guestbook that "rang a bell", but unfortunately couldn't put a face to. Anyone wanting to chat, I would be glad to e-mail with. I live in Las Vegas now. Would despartely like to locate CWO Mike DuFour who flew in 2nd Platoon during same time period.

Hello to the 119th and a profound thanks for your service to our country. Your site was referred to me as I'm looking for anyone who knew SP5 Billie Joe Ontis. Billie Joe was our neighbor in Denver, Colorado. He was truly an "All American Boy" who wanted to serve his country. We were all incredibly proud of Billie Joe when he s ipped out. He was kind too: in the summer of 1967 when my mom was dying from cancer, he stopped by the house to pay a courtesy call on her. He was wearing his uniform and said he'd visit again when he returned home. But my mom and Billie Joe died so they ever had their visit. Billie Joe's death was so hard on his family, especially his mom. Our neighborhood grieved over his loss too. If you knew this incredibly friendly, kind and brave young gentleman, would you drop me a note with your rememberances abou him? Your site is warm and informative and a beautiful tribute to those who served. I'm so glad Billie Joe served with folks such as yourself. Sincerly, Elaine Lange

Great websites! Really appreciated those photos, tremdously. Was in Vietnam (civilian) from'65 till end of Apr 75. Got run out by NVA. Returned in '89 for a tour of the Mekong Delta. Tough times. No vehicles running (no gas),no money, no jobs, very little food, boat people still leaving, etc. After a few more visits, settled down here again in Jan '94. Was based at, and operated out of, Camp Holloway from mid '65 though late spring '66. Some of the names I remember are LTC Cody, 52nd CO, Capt. Honsinger(?) pilot, took a round from the ground up through the seat, leg wounded and worked at S-4, later he was with the Hillclimbers down south. Lt. then Capt. Cleary, pilot who later was at Can-Tho with the 235th. Also Ltc Ed Smith, Pleiku Sector Sr. Advisor. Comment on your Mang Yang Pass photo. Take one each zero of your number. French Groupement Mobile No. 100, was destroyed in the Pass on 24 Jun 54. However, some of the men survived and made it to Pleiku. GM 100 was not only French. It also contained Vietn mese, Cambodian and mountain tribesmen. In Dec 53 GM total strength was 3,498. By Jun 54 (having fought its way from Bien Hoa to BMT to Pleiku to An Khe and was on way back to Pleiku)it was down to less than half strengh. Sincerely, Sears PS: Prior to 1975 I had been in all 44 province and the six special zones of the former RVN. Have now been to every province and every provincial capitol in North Vietnam as well. In addition have been to all the "legal" border crossings between Vietnam a d China, Laos and Cambodia. All travel was by open Jeep (Reconditioned US Army M151-A2). Have put over 90,000 miles on it since '94 and it still purrs like a kitten.

After a successful landing it had to be slung out after the LZ was secure." There were actually two landings! We were hit a out 20 feet off the ground, instantly losing our tail rotor. We spun wildly, throwing off most of the grunts on board and landing hard. We were looking at each other with relief when I noticed a Sgt. on the ground jabbing his finger and shouting toward us I undid my harness and leaned out to look under the chopper to see our skids were pinning two grunts to the ground. I told the pilot (Jr. Johnson was his name, I think) that he was going to have to pick it back up again. He replied, "I can't pick it up, e don't have a tail rotor!" I told him the situation and he asked us all if anyone wanted to get off the bird, that he would take it up himself. I would gladly have gotten off but no one said anything and I wasn't about to be the only coward so we stayed s Junior lightened 522 until we lifted off the grunts and spun downhill landing just short of the trees at the edge of the LZ. So Jr. Johnson should be credited with a takeoff and two highly successful landings without a tail rotor. Going to visit the ex-wife and kids for Turkey Day and will borrow the pictures I sent her from Pleiku and will scan them and send you a few. Many thanks for an excellent site. Eric

Reading the after ction brought back a lot of memories. I lost a lot of US and ARVN friends up there. You guys did a hell of a job. thanks very much. Ben Youmans

Thanks to Mark Herring for referring me to the 119th site - it's a great site. Well done! I attended the mini-reunion of the 119th at the VHPA in Ft Worth in June - well attended and a happy bunch. Reportedly the most in attendance ever and of course they were already working on the next one in Nashville, 99! They made welcome and comfortabl even though I was the "old man" and "oldest man" present!!! As Dragon 6 I resisted and disliked the need for the 119th to be An Khe....wanted you at Holloway with the rest of us! Thanks for the memories! Good memories! Wish there had been better ways to tell and show you how much I appreciated your dedication and service.... Nowadays I can do it in words and with hugs....too bad that wasn't the military or manly way of doing it back then. You were a great bunch - and still are! I respect and love every one of you.... Made a copy of the whole site and gave it to Pat, he was impressed. He was in DC a few years back trying to get the unit history. He found 1967 alright but had no luck for 1968. If anyone has a copy, he would appreciate it. He can be contacted thru my email. Keep up the good work. I also contacted Bub Parrish, who has an excellent Huey site at www.inetport.com/~bubp/ huey/index.htm and he addded this site and the Camp Holloway site to his Links Page.
