In XIX century had come the submarine handles companies. The Horta city, was one of the main points of the submarine handles of communications that bound the American continent to the European, and bound the Azores to the remaining world. The handles operators companies  had started to establish at Horta from 1893, an English companye, an German and two from United States.

During the World War II, British and US. Navy restocking and rest the crews on Horta harbour, later had come the hydroplanes, that crossed the Atlantic and made scale of restocking here to. Like you can see Horta city since early, and during several years, was coexisted with people from most varied origins, and during the permanence of the handles submarine companies it lived day by day with English, Americans, and Germans.

People of most developed countries, with a completely different experience of ours.
Living with peoples from so vast origins, they had in the Faial island an experience of life not sight in no other one of the Azores islands. Because of that this island became, peaceful, hostess, opened for the world. These characteristics have been remained until today, being that still today Faial island the most cosmopolitan of the Azores islands.

In face of the so great destruction that the 1998,  9 July earthquake caused in this island, it does not have in this island enough workmanship to proceed to the reconstruction. Necessarily, it will come workmanship from exterior. People with scruples, and people without scruples, serious and less serious people, opportunist, with the only   purpose of the money for the money. They are gone to verify situations of   social insecurity, crime will go to increase, the island inhabitants will go to start to have its distrusts, the peaceful and the hostess go to be ranks in cause.
Faial island has a serious risk of never coming  to be the same,  to lose its great characteristic:
