I am a prior Marine, and served with Weapons Platoon/Golf Company/2nd Battalion/6th Marine Regiment/2nd Marine Division. I had dual-MOS training... primary as an 0351 Anti-Tank Assaultman, and secondary as an 0341 Mortar Gunner. I found your site while searching for technical specs for the M224 mortar. I was quite profficient with this system, and loved operating it. During my service with the Marine Corps, I broke several Joint Military Gunner Competition records on the M224 m rtar. I am not an errogant person, but I will not hesitate to admit that I mastered the M224 mortar system. Currently, I am looking for exact dimension specifications for the M224 mortar... including the main base plate, bipods, and sight assembly. I have a small hobby metalworking shop, and am creating an entire set of scaled infantry-level military weapons a d weapon systems. Currently, I am developing these scaled miniatures in 1/4 scale (1/4" on the miniatures equals 1" on the life-size weapons.) It is my goal to reproduce these miniatures as accurately as humanly possible, including many parts. (My next project will be a 1/4-scale M249 Squad Automatic Weapon, which I operated during part of my Marine enlistment, between MOS assignments. My scaled M249 will include a functional loading tray, cocking lever, trigger, folding bipods, and possibly a removeable barrel.) For my M224 project, I want to include operational bipod mechanisms (cross slide, dead leg, elevation, and traversing mechanism). The mortar tube will also be removeable from the bipod assembly, just as with the real system. Although it will be very com lex to do so, I am also planning on having a very intricately detailed and removeable sight assembly. The sight assembly will most likely not have dial-operated incremental adjustments, but be mounted on simple friction bearings for semi-realistic moveme t. The base plate will also be a separate piece. When my set of scaled miniature weapons becomes a bit larger, I will introduce them to the public, via my web site, for general interest and possible purchase. Since constuction of these miniatures is a very time-consuming and very low production process I would have to ask a healthy price for my products. However, these pieces will be terrific for the die-hard military enthusiast. So far, my plans are to produce the following weapons and weapon systems: --M16A2 service rifle (with removeable bipods and magazine, and optional M203 40mm breech-operated grenade launcher) --M249 Squad Automatic Weapon 5.56mm machine gun(with opening loading tray, removeable 200-round magazine, and operational cocking lever) --M224 60mm mortar system (with features described above) --M47 "Dragon" wire-guided anti-tank missile system (my primary MOS weapon) (with removeable sight assembly and folding bipods) --"SMAW" 83mm unguided recoilless Shoulder-fired Multi-purpose Assault Weapon (also my primary MOS weapon) (with removeable rocket casing and folding bipods) --M240 "Golf" 7.62mm machine gun (with removeable tripod assembly and 200-round magazine) OTHER POSSIBLES: --TOW (Tether Operated Warhead) missile system (features not yet decided) --M2 50-cal machine gun (features not yet decided) --MK19 fully-automatic 40mm grenade launcher (features not yet decided) If you would like, I will keep you posted on my progress, and let you know when I am ready to make this collection available to the public. Comments: "Last of the muzzle loaders" stories. I was an "11C40" in Vietnam in 1967 and was surfing the net for "Mortar" and came across your page. I got real good at the 81. One day during a sweep in Long An Province, we wandered into a mine field and the platoon leader was killed by a mine. Two days later, on the way back the VC had erected a flag on the spot where he died in the middle of the mine field as a taunt. I was ab e to hit the flag pole from about 100 meters on the first shot(no wind that day)without registering the piece. The biggest problem we had with the 81 in Vietnam was the quality of the propellant on the rounds. most of the HE rounds we were getting were ov r 20 years old including the propellant. I leared that we had to compensate for the age of the propellant (the stuff that looked like swiss cheese slices wrapped in cellophane). Also, the 81 tube makes a serviceable drink cooler for about 3 hours until th ice melts. If you gotta hump it, better to fill it with beer than C-Rats - just be sure to oil it after.

Nick was captured with CPT Humberto "Rocky" Versace and SFC Dan Pitzer. Rocky w s executed on 26 Sep 65 - Dan was near death when released on 11 Nov 67. All 3 are now dead.
