When Duty Calls
By Julie Klum

As I stood in the doorway
I watched you pack your bag.
You said goodbye as tears spilled down my cheeks.
The door shut, and you were gone.
My heart broke into a million pieces.
I think I may have stepped on some.
I thought for a moment the world had stopped spinning
and life as I knew it had come to a standstill.
The baby cried and I held her close.
It was then that I knew the world was still spinning.
The phone rang. The bills came. The car broke down.
I stood in the livingroom up to my ankles in toys.
Darn that Lego hurt!
Hands on my head, the world was spinning faster.
I must get back on.
What in the world did I do with that bottle of Aspirin?
Oh, I bet he took it with him.
Dinner time. I look at the empty place at the table.
Not only is my heart broken, it is angry.
I asked God "Why?
Why did they have to take him this time?
Can't they take someone else?"
God in all his infinite wisdom replied
"I have chosen you for this special mission in life.
You are strong, yet soft.
You are an independant individual,
yet you can depend on yourself when duty calls.
You have the ability to handle a crisis in a manner
that makes me proud to call you My Child.
You are unique.
You are special.
You have been chosen.
Hold your head high.
You are a military wife."
Hi, I'm Amber and the camera shy man I'm dancing with is my husband, Stewart. We have been married one and a half years and in the Army since July 1998 (yes, I'm a newbie).
I'm so happy I've found this loop and all the nice people on it. I hope to continue to meet more of you.

Hi, I am Gaby and I have been married to my husband Jeff for 11 years. Jeff is with 14th En Bn (Platoon Sergeant) and a native of Pullman, WA. When I married Jeff I left my native country Germany to come and live here in the States. I am an Early Childhood Educator and worked in Germany and the US. I am not teaching currently, but keeping busy being the FSG Leader for our company, and the Assistant Mayor for Beachwood housing. We have a son, Liam who is 6 years old and goes to Beachwood Elementary School. Liam was born with a major heart: Tetralogy of Fallout, Pulmonary Atresia, VSD, and suffered a stroke when he was 1 year old which left him partially paralized on his right side. Because of the severity of his heart condition we were sent here to live at Ft. Lewis, WA and we have been here for the past 3 years. We love it here very much, and we have a lot of family around us.
Hello! I'm Contessa Holmes, and my husband is Louis. We have been married since Dec. 23, 1998, so as you can see Military Life is very new to me! I also just joined the GREAT loop!! I love all the CRAZY people on this thing!!! Anyway, back to my hubby. He was in the Marines for 4 years and switched to the Army to start a family. (US!) We have a little girl, Raivan. (8 months old) She's CUTE, looks just like me. Scary at times!!! LOL Louis' unit is 504 HHD MP BN 88M. His dream has always been to live in WA so he took this job title so that he could do that. If he's happy so am I. A little about me: I like to cross stitch, play with Raiven, Oh Yea, Do my Tae Bo!!!!! I'm a people person, so I can say I love to be around people.
Oh, I know you guys are saying shut up already, so I'll leave it at this: Can't wait to meet you GUYS!!!
The Military Wife

The good Lord was creating a model for military wives and was into His sixth day of overtime when an angel appeared. She said, "Lord, you seem to be having a lot of trouble with this one."The Lord replied, "have you seen the specs on this order? She has to be completely independent, posses the qualities of both father and mother, be a perfect hostess to four or fourty with an hour's notice, run on black coffee, handle every emergency possible without a manual, be able to carry on cheerfully, even if she is pregnant and has the flu, and she must be willing to move to a new location ten times in seventeen years.
And, oh yes, she must have six pairs of hands."

The angel shook her head. "Six pairs of hands? No way."

The Lord continued, "Don't worry, we will make other military wives to help her. And we will give her an unusually strong heart so it can swell with pride in her husband's accomplishments, sustain the pain of separations, beat soundly when it is tired and overworked, and be large enough to say, 'I understand', when she doesn't, and say, 'I love you', regardless."

"Lord", said the angel, touching his arm gently, "go to bed and get some rest.
You can finish this tomorrow."

"I can't stop this now" said the Lord. "I am so close to creating something unique. Already this model heals herself when she is sick, and can put up with six unexpected guests for the weekend, can wave goodbye to her husband from a pier, runway, or depot, and can understand why it is important that he leave."

The angel circled the model of the military wife, looked at it closely, and sighed. "It looks fine, but it's too soft."

"She might be soft," replied the Lord, "but she has the strength of a lion.
You would not believe what she can endure."

Finally the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek of the Lord's creation. "There's a leak," she announced. "Something is wrong with the construction. I'm not surprised that it has cracked.
You are trying to put too much into this model."

The Lord appeared offended at the angel's lack of confidence.
"What you see is not a leak," He said. "It's a tear."

"A tear? What is it there for?" asked the angel.

The Lord replied, "It's for joy, sadness, pain, disappointment, loneliness, pride, and a dedication to the values that she and her husband hold dear."

"You are a genius!" exclaimed the angel.

The Lord looked puzzled and replied, "I didn't put it there."
