Bush an AWOL deserter! Kerrey blasts Bush on service By Walter V. Robinson, Globe Staff, 11/1/2000 Senator Bob Kerrey, a Nebraska Democrat who won the Medal of Honor for his service in Vietnam, expressed disgust yesterday at evidence that George W. Bush sidestepped National Guard duty for months in 1972 and 1973, a lapse that Kerrey said amounts to Bus being AWOL - absent without leave. ''It upsets me,'' Kerrey said in an interview, ''when someone says, `Vote for me, I was in the military,' when in fact he got into the military in order to avoid serving in the military, to avoid service that might have taken him into the war. And then he didn't even show up for duty.'' Bush, Kerrey said in an interview, ''needs to explain where he was when he was supposed to be fulfilling his military obligation. If he is elected president, how will he be able to deal as commander in chief with someone who goes AWOL, when he did the sam thing?'' Dan Bartlett, Bush's spokesman on the issue, said Kerrey's remarks were ''an outlandish claim to make in the closing stages of a campaign.'' Bartlett noted that Bush received an honorable discharge and said Bush fulfilled his obligation. Kerrey was reacting to a Globe article, published yesterday, that cited evidence that Bush, as a Texas Air National Guard pilot in 1972, stopped flying after 22 months with his unit. Then, during a six-month stay in Alabama, Bush failed to report for requ red Guard drills. And six months after he returned to his home in Houston, his superior officers wrote that they had not seen him at his Houston air base for the previous year. Shortly after that, Bush was given an early discharge. Neither Gore nor officials in his campaign would comment publicly on the issue, because, Kerrey said, they are fearful that the Bush campaign will respond by pointing to President Clinton's active avoidance of the draft - as a Bush spokesman did last week when the Globe asked questions about Bush's service. Kerrey, who is not seeking reelection, said he called the Globe of his own volition, and in expressing his anger at Bush's service record referred twice to Clinton as a ''draft dodger.'' But, referring to Bush's attacks on Gore's character, Kerrey said the Texas governor has a moral obligation of his own to search his conscience and answer questions about where he was when he was supposed to be attending National Guard training. ''For someone who wants to be commander in chief, this stinks,'' Kerrey declared. ''I can understand if he forgot a weekend. But 18 months?'' Since the Globe first reported on the absences in May, Bush has declined to be interviewed on the issue. Bartlett has said Bush did appear for drills in Alabama. But there are no records that he did, and the commander of the Alabama unit which Bush was as igned to in 1972 has said that Lieutenant Bush never showed. In both Alabama and Texas, Vietnam veterans and Gore partisans have recently offered reward money for any Guardsman from that period who can verify that Bush appeared for duty between mid-1972 and mid-1973. Kerrey, who won the nation's highest award for heroism as a Navy SEAL in a 1969 action that cost him part of his right leg, said he is amazed that Bush's military service has escaped any real scrutiny. ''George W. Bush got into the Guard because of his fa her, and he got out because of who he was,'' Kerrey said. This story ran on page A22 of the Boston Globe on 11/1/2000.

First time visitor to your site, I'm a Captain currently on active, but will retire with 20 years in about 8 months, I'm trying to get more information on State Veterans benifits here in Wisconsin, or as I have been finding out the lack there of. It's di appointing to find out how few benefits there are in Wisconsin, in comparison to other states. With the population of veterans getting fewer and fewer I think that it is time for our states to start taking care of its vererans who volunteer to serve. I hink the problem is that most of the people who are passing the laws have never served. I'm interested if there are other people who feel this way.

Hi. I'm trying to find some information regarding what was occuring at Cam Ranh Bay in 1964-1965. My father, who was there at that time, is very ill. he does not have the typical "agent orange" symptoms, but others. His memory is completely gone, (he' 57 yrs old), and it's difficult to ask him. my mother is planning to get copies of his military records, but I'm doubtful she will "follow thru". I seriously DOUBT his current illness is related to the war, but my cousin thought it might be. My father rarely spoke of his military assignments in Viet Nam (he was there 2 times), but I do know that his second trip, while at Cam Ranh Bay, all of his hair fell out (at age 22). Doctors told him it was because of a bacteria he was exposed to. Has nyone heard of anything similar to this? I can't ask my father much of anything, because he no longer remembers what day of the week it is, much less what happened while he was in Viet Nam. Doctors have diagnosed him with all sorts of things, then changed their minds. He retired in 1982, after 20 years service in the Army.

Last night I had to go to my son's school for parent-teacher night. My son is in 2nd grade and doing well. As I walked through the cafeteria of his school I noticed that they had set up posters and displays for Veterans Day. I thought that it was nice that they were teaching the kids to remember the sacrifices. But when I looked around I noticed that they had displays for the Revolutionary War, The French-Indian War, the Way of 1812, the Civil-War, the Indian Wars, the Spanish-American War, WW I, WW II, the Korean War and the Gulf War. But there was no poster r display for the Vietnam War? I was completely shocked by this obvious error. When I got in the car to drive home, I found myself getting very angry. I have 5 bothers and 4 of us served in the Army (Active Duty or Reserve). My oldest brother C. Mark Judge was killed in the Ia Drang Valley with the 4th ID in July of 1967. When I got home, I went into my room and pulled our some pictures of my older brother taken of him in Vietnam. They are difficult pictures to look at and I keep them in a draw to myself. I brought my 5 year old and 7 year old sons into my room and showed them the pictures of their uncle Mark. I wanted to say something to them to make them understand how I feel, but I just could not find the right words. They simply cannot understand. This morning one of the TV news shows do a story on the "Traveling Wall" that is in New York this week at Bryant Park. I have been to "The Wall" in D.C. many times. As I watched the show on TV about the "Traveling Wall" I wondered how many people in t is country really care? How many people really understand? I am sorry to say that it is damn few. If you want to know how people really feel about Vets, just drive up to your local VA Hospital and take a good long look. This country is cutting back more and more each day on services for Veterans. My father is WW II Veteran and is in the VA Hospital in Lyons New Jersey. Each week I go to visit him and I see that they are closing down more services, shutting down wards and laying off staff. They have made the paperwork and process of applying f r benefits more complicated and difficult. People in this country need to take a good long look at how Veterans are treated. Thanks, Paul B. Judge

For those who missed the meeting we discussed ways to enhance webpages to increase traffic to them. Some ideas tossed out were to include guestbooks, to link from high volume sites like Link Exchange, include banners, register on search engines, include ite maps and combine smaller sites to one larger site. It was a productive meeting. Hope to see you at the next formal meeting of 6/1.

There are 19 VFW posts in the 14th District of which only 15 attended the 14th dist. meeting 5/17/98, 4 no shows, use to be 20 or 21 post last few years. John D. thinks there may never be more in the forseeable future.

I'm very discouraged with the Dept of Hawaii VFW. We have no Headquarters where we can visit to chat with other VFWers. I understand the State of Hawaii gave a grant of 1.5 million in addition to the building funds of 90 thous, but still we don't have a b ilding. This the main reason I became a Member At Large, At present I will not make acommitment to join a Post unless Dept of Hawaii VFW can give its Hawaii members a picture of what VFW is about in Hawaii. I am a Life Member.
