* Note: There were at least 120 commissioned officers in the Union Army
who were African - Americans - two came from Kentucky:
Captain Greenleaf B. Miller, 73rd USCT, from Covington
Chaplain Francis A. Boyd, 109 USCT, from Louisville
~ Black Confederates ~
In February 1865, John Hunt Morgan's troops passed a Resolution favoring official Confederate black enlistment. After additional letters from War Secretary Benjamin and General Lee, the Negro Soldier Law was signed on March 13, 1865.
It should be noted that there is enough evidence indicating that Black Confederates fought among the ranks for the South long before this law was adopted.
