Eve was the first to discover that there was something more outside the door. I was too busy exploring all the boxes and cool stuff in our new room to notice, then suddenly Eve was nowhere to be seen. And she's pretty big, too, at least compared to me. That's because she's been eating most of the food since we grew up together.
Our past is kind of "shrouded in mystery" - that's what Eve says. She loves mysteries. I don't remember much myself except when we moved into the SPCA and I didn't like it very much. There were too many cats and dogs were barking all night and Eve and I had a small cage where we ate (mostly Eve) and slept and waited to be "rescued."
A nice lady named Jane finally showed up and took us to live in a much better place called a Rabbit Rescue Center. It was part of this wonderful organization called the House Rabbit Society! You wouldn't believe all the different kinds of bunnies we saw at the center - big ones and little one; spotted ones and single-colored ones; floppy-earred and straight-earred; long-furred and short-furred - there were about 50 of us all in our separate, clean cages in a nice warm garage. Best of all, there were no dog there to keep us up all night barking!
But that wasn't the end of our journey! Lots of days and nights passed by and people came and took some of the other rabbits to special homes and sometimes new bunnies moved in. There was lots of activity when the volunteers came to clean up the cages every week, and sometime in there we went away for a short time to have an "operation" - Eve didn't like that much (neither did I) but the nice people said it would make us easier to "adopt."
Then, one day, our time to be adopted arrived! "Mom" showed up looking for us! She said she saw us on the "Internet," though I don't remember ever leaving our garage, and decided we were the perfect bunnies to take charge of her home. We met and had a short "bonding session" and hit it off right away. In no time at all we packed ourselves into the handy mobile bunny home "Mom" had brought with her and were ready to go as soon as Mom picked up the special adoption kit and signed some papers.
We had a nice bumpy ride back and soon found ourselves right here - home! Which takes me back to where I started, with me exploring our new room and Eve noticing that one of the walls sometimes opened up and there didn't seem to be anything really scary or dangerous on the other side.
Eve was right! Just outside our room was lots more places to explore and after I'd checked out our new cage and food dishes and all the boxes and cubby holes and soft, snuggly rabbit beds in our room I decided to follow her out. We found a really cool rabbit playroom that Mom called the Guest Room. Eve especially liked the comfy cave under the Guest Bed. We spent half the day running in one side and out the other and sometimes we rested on the nice soft mat underneath and hid. It was very nice.
But my favorite place was the "Bookshelves." I could crawl under the bottom shelf or squeeze behind the shelves or hop up on the lowest shelf behind the books and knock the books onto the floor. I could nibble on the soft papery part of the books from behind, where Mom couldn't see me. Or I could hop off the shelves onto the boxes full of papers standing nearby, then hop up to the second shelf. I tried it all - many, many times - until my little paws were too tired to explore any more. Then I pushed a few books off and took a nap.
While I was playing in the Guest Room I came across Esther's Daybook. Mom mentioned Esther to us - in fact every now and then she calls us Esther. But I didn't know what a really special rabbit Eshter had been till I began to read her diary and columns. I guess Mom must think we're pretty special, too, to put us in charge of Esther's home.
I read some of Esther's stories to Eve, who thought it was very nice but not as interesting as lunch and a pleasant nap in the Guest Cave. But I decided to try my paw at taking over the Hip Hop Reporter column. I'd start by keeping a diary just like Esther. Eve thought that was fine as long as I didn't make too much noise when she was sleeping.
Wow! You'll never believe what we discovered this morning! A whole other floor right above our rooms with lots more boxes, shelves and furniture to explore and play with. Now we know where Mom keeps disappearing to when she says she has to "work."
Eve had seen her go up some stairs then disappear around a corner and became suspicious that Mom might be holding out on us. Eve's always a little suspicious of people. But she was right that we'd been missing out on a really great new playground! We ran all over the rooms and up and down the stairs until we were exhausted.
At the end of the day Eve insisted we stay upstairs till Mom went to bed - she was convinced the whole new floor might be missing the next morning if we didn't protect it. I wanted to return to our cozy bunny beds but later I was glad we stayed. I discovered the Computer, where Esther published her Hip Hop Reporter column and her very own webpage!
So now I have everything I need to become the new Hip Hop Reporter. I visited Mom's Paw Prints Post and Esther's Creature Cottage and I believe I've figured out how to work the Computer after a few trials. I hope those files I accidently deleted weren't too important!
Mom didn't look too happy about those missing files. I'm not sure how she figured out it was me who tossed them out. I just thought that little trash can in the corner of the screen was so cute and got kind of carried away playing with it.
Anyway, I've managed to schedule my practice time when Mom isn't around and I plan to blame any future "mistakes" I make on the squirrels in the attic who like to gnaw on the wiring every now and then. That should solve that problem.
So now that you know who's who and what's what, I'm ready to begin my journal. I've been making lots of observations and discussing everything with Eve, who has plenty of opinions and insights I'm sure she'd love to share. All I need now is a great adventure to write about.
