Tankbert's Tropical Fish

The webcam is usually aimed at my 29 gallon aquarium, containing 4 Clown Loaches and small group of Convict Cichlids. I've had two of the Clowns since 1995. The largest is now about 4 inches long. The first two Convicts (male and female) were added in early 1998. After a couple of months, they spawned and produced about 50 fry. They grew quickly and I've traded most of them to the local fish shop. In late 1998, I traded a dozen of the grownup Convicts for two small Clown Loaches. I still have about 15 convicts including the big male. The remaining Convicts have spawned many times since then, but with so many fish in the tank, the fry get picked off as snacks after a few weeks.

The Latin name for the Clown Loach is Botia macracantha. They are native to fast moving streams in Southeast Asia. Here are a few snapshots to illustrate the setup ...

This is an overall view of my tank. This was taken in the morning, five minutes after the lights come on. Everyone is out for some exercise. All four clown loaches are in sight. The large convict cichlid at the bottom right is the father of all the smaller cichlids (small black fish in center). There are lots of rock structures to provide shelter.

This is the left half on the tank. It shows all four Clown Loaches on the gravel (orange and black) with several Convict Cichlids (thin black and white stripes) in the background. The left half of the tank is popular because a pair of convicts have spawned and taken over the right half of the tank.

This picture was taken looking through the left end of the tank. The front glass is on the right side of this picture. It shows a closer view of the Clown Loaches in the foreground. Two are resting on the bottom and two are "going vertical". They love to swim in the current which comes down the front glass. In the background are some of the Convict Cichlids.

A close-up view of two Clowns hanging out in one of their favorite places. The smaller one I've had for about a year. The larger one since 1995.

Convict Cichlids love to dig! Here is a small pit at the left end of the tank being dug by a Convict. A pair of them have spawned on the vertical rock on the right. The eggs were raided (eaten) by the largest male Convict who had fry of his own at the other end of the tank.
