Daisen Cattery

American Shorthairs

The basic characteristic of the American Shorthair is moderation.  A natural breed native to the United States, the American Shorthair is a medium to large cat, with strong muscle tone, heavy boning, and a broad head with uniquely expressive eyes.  The coat is hard and protective.  The American Shorthair is moderately active, and makes a superb pet for adults and children alike.  They also get along well with other pets.  Highly intelligent, it is no surprise to those of us owned by these special cats, that they are one of the most popular breeds used in advertising today.
American Shorthairs come in all the Traditional colors and patterns (Traditional includes everything but the pointed, sepia or mink colors).  By far, the most popular color is the silver classic tabby.  The silver tabby features black markings on a silvery-white ground.  If you stroke the black markings backwards, the undercoat is pure white.  The classic tabby pattern is shown to its best advantage in this color, emphasizing the bullseyes, tail rings, butterflies and necklaces that are the benchmark of the classic.
American Shorthairs are a hearty breed, with few health problems.  They have hearty appetites, and are usually not picky.  If anything, the only eating problem you have with Americans is trying to convince the older ones that they need to go on a
diet.  Queens usually maintain a normal activity level throughout their pregnancy, and have little difficulty giving birth.  The kittens have a tendency to come out squealing, and looking for food.  Americans make great moms, and tend to be protective of their young.  Americans tend to live long lives, and it is not uncommon to see 15-20 year old cats.  Some live to be 25 years-old or more.
As pets, Americans are not clingy - but are good companions.  They have little voices that may seem out of place for their size.  My 16-pound neuter still sounds like a kitten!  Most prefer to sit next to you, rather than on you (unless you're sleeping - then they will pile on).  They will come to you and meow for attention, then go on their way when you're done.  They are very tolerant of handling and being mugged with affection.  Americans are especially tolerant of children, and will put up with a lot of clumsy handling.
American females tend to be more domineering than males.  It is cute to watch a young female kitten come out and start whipping the crew into shape.  They usually get their way with the boys, and younger females - but never with the alpha or matriarch female, who remains omnipotent (just ask her).

All in all, the American Shorthair is suited to just about every lifestyle.  They adapt well at just about any age, and will make a wonderful addition to any home.
