In 1978 Lloyd went to pursue his other passion, the sea. He obtained his captains license and began a charter service to the Bahamas. In those years he sailed the equivalent of 4 times around the world. It was after these events that Lloyd inherited the nickname "Captain". In 1984 Captain Lloyd Molby was diagnosed with macular degeneration (an optical disorder) which leads to gradual loss of vision. He had to give up sailing. He collected disability, and lived  in subsidized housing.

The store started out with 8 pairs of breeding English Budgies, and a few various types of birds on consignment. Today Captain now has four employees, over 200 unique birds in stock and he now has the busiest bird store in Sarasota, Florida. Many birds are bred, by Captain and others are bought and then hand fed. All are given his love, attention and expert training that can only be obtained through years of experience.   Lloyd Molby is one fascinating, talented and creative man, with a passion for pets and a lifetime of experiences, "Captain" rates two thumbs up by pet lovers and birds everywhere!
