back it up, pal

Letters to Andrew.

(Andrew was (is) my 19-year old cousin who died from cancer in 1991. We were friends - though we lived a couple towns away from each other - and his was the first death of someone I knew closely. From time to time I think of him, and I wish I thought of him more often. I'm not sure if he would have wanted it this way, but he's a reminder and an inspiration to me. Life's too short to be wasted by fear.)

So I was gonna spend page after page describing the world of 2000 for you, trying to give color to the many things that have shaped life and society for the last 10 years....but that's tough to do, man. I find it easier to tell stories and anecdotes, and try to give you some perspective on the things that change and the things that stay pretty much the same.

- I can tell you this much: being almost 30 doesn't feel much different from being 20. Sure, we've all got some money now, and I've got an insurance policy, but the fears, the joys and the human interactions you have are much the same.

- Here's a funny fact: you already met your best friends for life. Everyone I know harks back to the days of their youth, when their lives were being shaped, and finds their true friends were the folks that experienced those changes with them. It gets tougher to meet and get to really know people as you get older.

- Some of your motivation leaves you. Well, that's not a true statement - let's say it gets redirected. I dunno if it was me, or what, but the motivation to procreate was a driving force towards getting me up and out on a Friday night. Now, I have a wonderful wife, I have many comforts, and you learn, sometimes with regret, but usually not, to enjoy the finer and more relaxing parts of life.
