The First Maltese Dogs

Maltese is thought of as the world's first lap dog.  It developed  on the Mediterranean island of Malta over 2,000 years ago.  Ladies in Greek and Roman noble families were fond of these little dogs.  They carried them in the long sleeves of their robes, and waited on them like babies. They were nicknamed "The Roman Ladies' Dog".  The Maltese grew to be one of the gentlest of all toy dogs.
The Maltese is among the more glamorous of a classification of dogs known as toy breeds and is frequently referred to as "the aristocrat of dogs."   This may have to do with the fact that for many centuries, Maltese have been household pets to the wealthy, famous and culture.  It is known that
Queen Elizabeth I had a little Maltese dog.  It would sit with her upon the royal throne.

Take the time to love a Maltese and you have a friend forever.
